The Evolution of Killstreaks in Call of Duty
When Modern Warfare originally introduced itself in 2007, the world was found dumbstruck with the sheer ingenuity and fresh multiplayer the game brought to the table. Weapon customizations, perk selections, a broad array of maps, and a host of different game modes all made up the perfect enigma that was Modern Warfare. But there was one aspect to the game that often goes overlooked when talking about what made that game so great: Killstreaks.
Everyone loved the killstreaks when they were introduced way back when. The classic UAV with the accompanying airstrike and helicopter brought in some extra goodies for players skilled enough to yoink consecutive kills before dying. It added an extra layer of depth to the games where-in you were constantly en guard against enemies positions so that you didn’t get shot in the back because nothing was more satisfying than getting a 5th kill, only to have your airstrike push you into a free helicopter.
The game wasn’t only about having the High kill / low death ratio any more. Now, players were more excited with a mediocre game with a good number of killstreaks obtained than they were about the inverse: a great game with little to no killstreaks at all.
World at War came out a year later, opting to keep things relatively tame in multiplayer, keeping the killstreaks, but swapping out the helicopter MW saw for a pack of vicious pups.
But then came Modern Warfare 2
If you don’t remember the hype surrounding this game’s release, I feel bad for you. Modern Warfare two pushed the concepts its predecessor invented to the limits that players could experience without being (completely) game breaking.
Weapon customizations, dog tags, clans tags, all the good stuff was still there. But perks had been buffed, reworked, and thrown to the roof in power, weapons were unique, plentiful, and downright unfair in some cases (looking at you, model 1887), and this was true even for secondaries. Modern Warfare two took everything Modern Warfare had and said “I’m going to make it like that, but MORE.”
And this, too, extended to killstreaks. For the first time, Call of Duty had introduced the ability to customize your in-game killstreaks. The standard UAV to bombies to AI controlled shooties was no longer mandatory, and the options given to the player aside from those were astounding.
The classics were still there, but now players could choose from a controllable missile, buffed up helicopters (that required more kills), the underappreciated auto-sentry that straight up played the game for you, plenty more and then the infamous trio: 7 kills for a harrier, which carries you to 11 kills for a chopper gunner which, if you’re lucky, carries you to 25 kills for a Nuke.
The nuke, as most of you should know, was a killstreak that acted as an end game ability. You got 25 kills in a row? You win. End of story. Period. The game is over.
For the first time, a player's killstreaks weren't just more important than their KDA, but were more important than the actual objective of the game they were in and how unbalanced is that? But the community loved it, and Infinity Ward has been riding the line between the high the community got off those killstreaks and creating games with the balance for eSports ever since.
And that’s how we’ve ended up where we are. The contemporary Modern Warfare of 2019 has some real innovation with their killstreaks, while also keeping the power level of said killstreak tame to avoid too much reliance on them. Kills gained from said killstreaks don’t count towards your other killstreak by default to prevent any infamous trio’s like the one previously mentioned, and, honestly, players are more likely to see their killstreaks as a nice bonus to the game they are already playing as opposed to the main attraction the game is preventing them from obtaining, and that’s probably a very good thing, but maybe you disagree.
Either way, that’s an evolution, and it’ll be wild to see what IW comes up with this next decade to mix things up once again.
