POPULAR Modern Warfare is CoD’s Last Chance to Stay Alive
If they fail here it’s over. Call of Duty will bleed out into irrelevance, their sales continuously dwindling until the franchise is kept alive only by clueless yet well-intentioned parents strolling the aisles around Christmas time. As you can see from the chart below, the years haven’t been kind to CoD, with all 3 of the most recent releases among the worst-selling.
It’s no surprise that the latest Call of Duty games have underperformed. We now live in a world where all the biggest titles are incredible free to play games with extremely long lifespans. CoD is this vestige, an ancient relic of the past that still churns out another recycled release every year for $60. And what do they bring to the table? Not much.
It’s obvious that CoD needs a change. They tried to do it with Blackout, but Blackout felt more like a copycat copout than anything and the surge of players didn’t last long. This time CoD is trying a different approach - the exact opposite one in fact. Rather than eliminating campaign mode like they did for Black Ops 4, they’re letting campaign take center stage.
For the first time in a long time, Call of Duty is trying to be pioneering. Players will be forced to make difficult emotional and tactical decisions that will deeply impact the rest of the game. That’s not to say the Modern Warfare will be the first game in history where your choices matter, but it’s rare to see the effects of those choices affect other aspects of the game such as multiplayer. Speaking of multiplayer, Modern Warfare will be the first Call of Duty (and one of the first big games in general) to feature cross-platform play shortly after launch. This is a huge deal and another big sign that CoD is finally headed in the right direction.
Modern Warfare will be the 16th major release for the Call of Duty franchise but it’s one of the very few that actually strives to push the boundaries and offer something different from its predecessors. In other words, I’m actually interested in a Call of Duty game for once and that’s saying something. Only time will tell whether or not these efforts will translate into a better game and bigger sales but Call of Duty fans better hope so because this is arguably CoD’s last chance to show what they’re made of and claim their place in the future of gaming. Let's see if it works.
