Memes How Fortnite sets the blueprint for Battle Royales

When a genre is born, the very next thing to happen is a twist on that very genre. Imitation is the biggest form of flattery, but originality within that imitation is the mark of genius. To relate it to music, in the ’90s there was grunge, which was immediately followed by post-grunge and then right after that, nu-metal. With movies, the ’80s were excessively cheesy and corny with their plots and characters, so the ’90s followed up with everything being as cool looking and edgy as possible, just look at any character in the Matrix for example. With videogames and Battle Royales, in particular, we started with PUBG and were immediately followed by Fortnite and TONS of Fortnite clones (most of which are terrible). In response to that influx of garbage, Call of Duty: Warzone came and dropped the realism hammer on the genre and everyone followed suit and said thank god we’re free of the clones. But now, Fortnite has returned strong and introduced things that simply NO other game is doing right now. The innovation is what keeps the genre going and it’s what Fortnite is proving it is best at.
We can start by looking at the Party Royale, which takes killing out of the equation and instead invites players to simply come and hang out in. Gone are the weapons and the need to kill and in are several nonviolent competitive modes and some fun places and items to interact with. It feels like a blossoming social network in a way and it’s something that no other Battle Royale game has tried before it. It’s not a bad time in the videogame world to explore some of these nonviolent playspaces right now and this experiment has seemed to pay dividends greatly early on. The most innovative and creative moment of the Party Royale mode has been with the live-in game concerts featuring artists like Steve Aoki and Deadmaus. The minds at Epic Games keep on churning while other Battle Royale games seem stagnant and stuck in place.

How much effort is Epic Games putting in? Well, let’s take a look at the dungeon’s mode implemented into the Save The World mode that until recently has been one of the most forgotten about modes in videogame history. That’s changed with the dungeon crawling. Fortnite had been essentially a one-trick pony until this was introduced and now it’s become hugely popular on its’ own right. The crazy part is that it feels like a completely different game. It feels like Epic Games just randomly said let’s make a dungeon crawler mode and did it with the same enthusiasm and creativeness that they did the Battle Royale mode with and once again have created something so fresh feeling that despite it having so much in common with other games in its’ genre, it still feels like its’ own thing. While they could’ve just thrown together a lazily created dungeon crawler, instead it is packed with colorful characters, interesting abilities, and techniques to master and an incredibly creative assortment of levels and monsters to fight. Just when you thought Fortnite might be past its’ prime, it shows you it still has its’ fastball.

What could be coming next for Fornite? If you see the current additions that have been made to the map over the last three years and then take a look at the success of its’ dungeon crawler mode, one could make the assumption that maybe a hybrid of sorts could make its’ way into Fortnite one day. What if those monsters break free from these dungeons and start spilling out onto the map? We’ve already seen plenty of NPC enemies in the Battle Royale mode to this point, so it’s not too outside the realm of possibility to see a spillover into Battle Royale mode. Instead of uniting a few people against these monsters, why not unite 100? Take the comradery that is building with the Party Royale mode and use it to defeat waves and waves of monsters invading the map. Is it ambitious? Certainly, but that has never stopped the most innovative minds in the Battle Royale genre yet, so why should it stop them now?
