If you use any lantern, it's fully automatic. If not, you have to manually tap/hold the button at the bottom, and try to maintain the bar in the middle section. The higher the rarity, the smaller this middle section will be. Different rarities will appear at random, but if you are using lantern, only wisps of that lantern's element will appear during the run. Hope that helps.

I use lantern all the time. It's very hard to hold and maintain the bar, I lost many 5 stars like this. Lantern is fully auto, must easier. It's just extremely hard to get.
I usually hold until I'm around the middle, then find a good tap rhythm to maintain. Not always successful, but it does work for me.
