But on the other hand, I have done it in just 3 tries.

I suspect that the blood gem slot is a fixed percentage, maybe 1-3%. So if you have just the blood gem and any other slot open, your chance of getting the blood gem is still that fixed 1% to 3%.

Also, what difficulty/stage are you playing on? And have you been playing daily? Between the initial clear rewards and the daily missions you should have been most/all the way through the second board, guaranteed.
