Your League of Legends Guide to the Macro Game
“Win lane, lose game.” A common phrase spouted by almost every League of Legends player at some point in their career or another. A lot of players progress to the point where they move past the mindset that causes such an annoying sentence to be typed mid-game, but another subset are keen on the idea that they are actually challenger level players who just can’t get enough good-team-RNG to bump their rank up.
If you’re one of these people, and you DO actually win lane and lose games, then I got news for you, your macro sucks. Which, in turn, means you suck. And that’s okay, almost all of us do. But it doesn’t have to be this way, you don’t HAVE to suck at League. That’s what this article is here for.
Before we begin, let me make clear: Even if you don’t have good mechanics, learning good macro play is still beneficial. Macro and micro go hand in hand, and one does NOT come before another.
As LS once said, knowledge in League isn’t learned in a linear fashion.
With that out of the way, we’re going to start with the first thing you should be paying attention to:
Yes, the macro starts here. You should be checking everything; every lane’s matchups, every player’s summoner spells, and what your team’s win conditions are at ANY stage of the game.
To be specific about the lane matchups, you should be focusing on two key aspects of the early lanes. Firstly, who gets priority in said lane? Priority is simply given the champion that can react to external conflict outside of their lane first. This can be jungler contesting a scuttle, it can be a moonfruit being taken, it can be a neutral camp being stolen. Any of these things count, and whoever can react first has priority.
So how do you know who has priority? That’s simple, whoever has the better waveclear OR has more kill pressure has the priority. Period. If I'm in the top lane playing as Nasus against an Irelia, I HAVE to give her the space she wants early on as she has more waveclear and, pre-six, has more killer pressure. This means she can shove without pause and I have to wait for her to put the wave in a more vulnerable location for me to be safe while farming. Put simply: she shoves, and I clear afterwards. She has priority.
This is especially important for you would-be junglers out there who continually invade without checking to see if your laners can react quickly enough to help you first, often leading to you giving first blood right before a quick ‘team sucks gg’ in all chat. You’re the worst.
So that’s the first step, check matchups, learn who gets priority in lane and who doesn’t. Remember, a lane without can’t react first, but they are ripe for roams and ganks, so it's a give and take.
Onto the second point.
We won’t spend too much time on this, since you know as well as I do that you could be doing this better and you already know how. I’ll just reiterate some points for the newbies, in case they forgot or straight up don’t know about the strategy behind warding.
Rule 1: Vision on the map doesn’t help you if the information on that part of the map is irrelevant. See the jungler top-side? Tell your support to not place ward in tri-bush and save her vision threat. Playing Nasus into Irelia? Don’t place a control ward into river bush, she’s going to clear it and all you’re doing is giving her free xp and gold. You’re under tower anyway, so that vision does nothing.
Rule 2: Vision that tells you when you’re BEING ganked isn’t as valuable as vision that tells you that you’re GOING to be ganked. Tri-bush and river bushes are great, but do you know what’s better? Go throw a control ward on that weird bush next to the enemy blue buff. You know, this one?
Or maybe do that same thing near the enemies red buff? Or at least put the wards a bit further into the river. Honestly you didn’t buy a wedding ring for the bushes right next to your lane, you don’t have to marry them. Think to yourself this sentence: “If I was an enemy coming to gank my lane, what ward would really suck right now?”
Remember that and you’ll never stray from good positioning.
Rule 3: Stop telling the enemy team you see them, for god’s sake. Saying “Hello, Lee.” Into all chat when the enemy jungler comes to gank you isn’t clever and it doesn’t make you witty, you just gave the enemies info on where you have vision and ruined a great situation for your team. Next time, when you DO have vision of the enemy jungler, bait ‘em a bit.
Step forward just enough to keep him around for a little longer. For all he knows, you’re about to go all in, right? So he might choose to stick around for a second. Do that a couple times, and you’ve wasted a good 5-20 seconds of his. In the early game, that amount of time is HUGE for a jungler, don’t underestimate it.
Stop taking ignite into top lane, you’re not doing you or your team any favours in the long term. Yes, if the enemy is stupid you can easily take control of the lane, but if their enemy is smart (or at least SENTIENT) you’re going to be shoved out of lane with no quick way back, putting them and their farm spiraling into oblivion while they help take dragons and towers for their team while you’re caught with your pants down trying desperately to smack a tower for a plate or two.
Mid laners, you can run this too if you think you can abuse your wave management effectively against your opponent, but it's not a requirement. And for you bot laners, you USUALLY don’t take tp, but just remember that your team will probably still have it, so play around that. If you find yourself in a situation that’s about to turn south fast, don’t be afraid to pop a ward down in the middle of the fight solely for the purpose of giving your top or mid laners a point of entry with TP. It's the other half of the TP spell that’s never talked about but is crucial, so keep an eye on it.
Just remember. Teleporting post-six for farm isn’t teleport’s STRENGTH, it's the spell’s safety net. You should be teleporting to help contest objectives or, in the late game, win teamfights after shoving a lane in. You CS should not be guaranteed by your summoner spell choice, but your micro play and wave management. Speaking of which...
Freeze your lanes. That’s pretty much it.
If you’re behind and need assistance, a frozen lane will force the enemies to come forward to shove it, leaving them open to ganks. If you’re ahead, then your opponent shouldn’t be able to farm at all, given your ability to push them back should they attempt a shove. In both situations, you’re only helping yourself.
How do you know when a wave is properly frozen? Two simple rules here: First, after leaving and coming back to the wave, will the opponents wave be able to sustain itself while killing your own waves? If so, you’ve got the first part down.
Second, will said enemy wave crash your tower before you get back to lane? If not, then you’ve got the second part down and have a properly frozen wave. You can back now.
Basically, what you’re trying to do is make sure the enemy is losing more cs than you are while both of you are out of lane. There’s FAR more to it than that, but you can only learn the advanced stuff with time and study. I’d recommend the amazing DOPA for the best wave management you’re ever going to find in solo queue:
“Micro is macro, but, like, tiny...”
Yeah, it's just as important. Without being better at your micro game (mechanics, reactions, overall skill in the 1v1) you won’t be able to apply these philosophies to their fullest potential and, consequently, won’t be winning as many games as you might otherwise.
But that’s just the way it is. Macro can only take you as far as micro can. You need both to complete the marathon, and even then, the game is constantly evolving, and so too will your strategies you employ.
But that’s not something to concern yourself with. First, you gotta become a master of the wards and waves.
Had to make a new account I’m only level 13 just trying to level up and make money all over again

Duo Queue is a Problem
It is not an exaggeration to say that League’s biggest fundamental problems as an online competitive game lies within the inconsistencies in its matchmaking. Countless videos and articles go into depth about how you can escape ‘elo hell’ and how to play around bad teammates, but none seem to even touch on what to do when paired against a pair of enemies who have decided to duo-queue.
This picture is a common example of what you'll find when searching up tips to carry in League.
All the normal aspects of the RNG heaven we’ve come to know and love are just par for the course at this point; One game you’ll have a fully competent team of players that can do their jobs relatively well and respond quickly to macro decisions, another game will sit you down with four twelve year olds first timing champions who think that first blood is more important than 50 cs.
It's not a fun aspect of the game, but outside of Clash or flex, where this teamwork is the point, it isn’t really solvable. But what is one to do to increase his win rate against opponents that are queuing up together? We know how to win WITH a duo-partner, but what about against them? Honestly, there isn’t much to be said here other than to take your normal hyper-carry mindset and replace it with a ‘I refuse to feed this duo even a single kill’ because you won’t be playing a game of five individuals vs five individuals, you’ll be playing with a group of 5 individuals versus at least one team with a number of randoms at their disposal. I.E. a duo queue and three randoms.
You just won’t be able to pull off what you normally do in a match where you know your lane opponent isn’t communicating with anyone vocally. This isn’t just an issue for lower-elo players, either.
I don’t know how often a taric / yi funnel strat is seen in extremely high ranks, but I imagine they are insta-dodges beyond platinum, where the players involved are good enough to know that they are at an extreme disadvantage whenever they see those two picked in champion select. This disadvantage isn’t just because their opponents are going to take a late game hyper-carry and shove gold into his face as fast as possible, but also because the enemies running the funnel strategy are almost 100% of the time duo-queuing.
While funnel strategies are issues that Riot is trying to tackle, duo queueing is not. Probably because they feel it would be a great expense to the playerbase, who enjoy playing with their friends, only to improve the overall quality of the ranked experience, which is already in the gutter to begin with.
This raises an issue for high-level players who consistently find themselves playing against duo-queueing enemies who are using communications to bump up their win rate significantly. It's a blatant advantage that essentially calls for any mid laner to find a jungler to pair with, or any adc to find a decent support to queue up with. Doing otherwise might be more honorable and closer to what SOLO-queue is supposed to be, but isn't helping the player in question.
This isn’t to say that winning a match against duo-queuers is impossible or even that difficult 100% of the time. In fact, a lot of the times that couldn’t be further from the truth. But the demonstrable culture can’t be denied or looked away from; on top of dodging bad teammates, cheesing a game with funnel strats, experiencing an AFK teammate every 5 matches or so, and praying your enemies aren’t duo-queing, the current state of League’s solo queue experience is abysmal. It’s effects on the playerbase, and Riot’s response to the situation, is summarized fairly well by NEACE, a long time League veteran on his twitter:
“Ranked is so neglected by Riot that it has gotten to the point where it has a leaver or a troll in like 20-25% of the matches and nothing is being done. I just leave matches now and I know my account will be fine. Riot is betting that it won't kill their game, are they right?”
A happy medium of disabling the duo-queue system above a certain rank, say plat 1, for example, is probably the best approach for Riot to look at, but one thing is for certain: Leaving League in the state that it’s in isn’t just enabling the strategies that are infuriating to play against, it's also poisoning the well and creating more situations that cause certain people to just straight-up abandon the match, or reserve their play times to hours that see less and less duo-queuers (2 a.m. - 6 a.m.).
Until something is done about the issues mentioned here, randomization in league will remain at a toxic high. There is a world in which this can be reduced to a minimum, but it looks like the community will just have to wait for now.
Still no honor

No surprises there, C9 & G2 won LCS, LEC
No surprises in LCS & LEC.
C9, who kept the 1st place for the whole LCS Spring Split won the Final match 3-0 against Flyquest. C9 finally, finally got the trophy since NA LCS 2014 Spring Split, it's been 6 years.
G2, who also kept the 1st place in LEC Spring Split won the Final match 3-0 against Fnatic. G2 was defeated by MAD Lions during the playoff, made a ridiculous base race mistake from Caps and went to the loser bracket. However, they came to the Final and won the trophy for 3 times in a row.

Patch 10.8 is here and it brings more changes to the jungle and funnel comps. It also makes some big balance moves for adcs in the bot lane, so we may see classic adcs taking over from the season 10 duo of Aphelios and Senna.

Valorant anti cheat might be coming to League of Legends
So recently there was a post about the anti cheat being used in Valorant running at the Kernel level.
Well two months ago there was a post about an upcoming anti cheat for League of Legends that sounds a lot like how the Valorant one is running. Apparently it was looking to go into effect 2021 according to the Lutris post.
Both look to be executing at the kernel level and Valorant might be perfect place to test it before it goes live on LoL.
Just as a reminder to the issues this can bring,
1.) This will make league unable to run on wine for Linux.
2.) Since this is running at with high privileges and cannot be directly turned off. It can always monitor and really do whatever it wants on your system.
3.) Someone could find a security vulnerability and turn this into a rootkit.
4.) It's already reported to have bugs that negatively impact to other games.
