My guess on why Valve is launching Artifact

Over the course of years, people have been constantly asking Valve to develop sequels for Half-life, Left 4 Dead, Portal 3, et cetera, et cetera. But why have they ingored all the voices and started developing a TCG? I'm sure there are lots of reasons, but one thing I know for sure is that because the potential profit for card games exceeds single/multiplayer video games by far. And by far, I mean tremendously. You can purchase almost any video games within the price of $59.99. However, with $2 booster packs being sold in Artifact, people most likely will spend much more than that. It's well known that Artifact will launch with 280 cards available, and by deducting the 108 cards, which would be given to us in the purchase of the game, from the total card pool, the game leaves us total of 172 cards to pull. Unless you are a very lucky person, I highly doubt that you'll pull all desired cards within the price range of a full game. And there's always a little bit of money Valve takes away when you're using Steam market which would eventually snowballed to be a huge mountain of cash for Valve to take. What about microtransactions that most of the games today have? Wouldn't it be an incentive for Valve to develop sequels? Please do keep in mind that many gamers often criticize developers for putting in such greedy detail. TCGs, however, are relatively free from getting such criticisms since people are very used to buying packs to play the game. I love what I've seen from Artifact as much as you do. However, clearly, the game is made to make Valve richer. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it. Companies seek for maximized profits which makes it totally natural. Just wanted to let you know what I was thinking.

I agree on the point that Artifact would bring Valve a lot of money. Without a doubt, it will grow to be a cash cow in the near future XD And as a fan of Valve, I couldn't agree more that we need sequels for the games said in the post. However, also as a TCG fan, Artifact is exactly what I've been wishing for, and I can wait a few years more for Half-Life 3 to play games like this. :)

It's pretty obvious, really. To make more money.
