Will Artifact Outpace Hearthstone?

I was reading this article about Artifact potentially beating Hearthstone. Do I think it can beat Hearthstone? Yes I do. Will it? Hard to say, simply because of the complexity of the game. Someone who is familiar with card games can just look at Artifact vs Hearthstone and determine Artifact is way more complicated. I fear this complexity and overall length time of the game might turn a lot of players off from continuing to play the game. Especially if they already have invested in Hearthstone.   The reason why I say Artifact has a chance at overtaking Hearthstone is because I believe Hearthstone is in a terrible state right now and is only getting worse. Artifact has this opportunity to capitalize on all the disgruntled players like me and have me investing my time into their game. My other biggest worry is the card economy, no in-game currency that can be earned by just playing. You need to pay every time you want more cards. This could be a big barrier to entry for most players. However, Magic the Gathering Online (the OG in online TCG), has proven that there are passionate players out there willing to fork over tons of cash into the virtual counterpart. I would rather spend the same amount of money to get physical cards over virtual ones.   If none of what I just mentioned doesn't bother you then it's safe to say you'll enjoy Artifact. Otherwise Artifact could use a little something extra to catch up and pull ahead of Hearthstone and their freemium platform.

It will outpace Heartstone for a few days or week and even after the esports competition that's when will know how long can it outpace the TCG genre...

If anything, I believe all Valve needs to do is introduce a high prize pool annual tournament like they did with Dota. This will bring in all the pros looking for fame and riches.

I must say, it will be hard to penetrate the market and bring players to Artifact even if Hearthstone is giving cancer to players. Artifact will surely get tons of attention with it being developed by Valve and Richard Garfield and all. However, its complexity does worry me that it'll eventually be a one time thing. But the most important thing is that I'll enjoy it regardless :)

Oh yea I'm definitely looking forward to it! The complexity worries me less so than the purchase of booster packs. Gaben has something planned I can feel it.

Developing a game on nothing and expecting players to play the game is absurd, but it's totally different for companies like Valve. So far, they have been creating an empire of their own with the games they've developed, and I do believe in the customer loyalty theory. Plus, considering the fact that Steam is one of the most used digital distribution platform, players will at least give attention to Artifact even if it's just a little. The only thing I'm not sure of is what you said. Will Artifact attract enough players to make success happen? Yes. Will Artifact outpace Hearthstone? That's a whole different story.

We are getting ever so closer to uncovering the answer to these questions. You hit a mark on Valve achieving milestones other companies only wished to obtain.
