Valve’s Artifact has lost 97% of Playerbase in 2 Months

To say Artifact is struggling would be an understatement. The game was incredibly hyped before it released, as it is a digital card game from a partnership between the creator of Magic: the Gathering and one of the biggest gaming companies in history. However, almost immediately after release we saw issues with Artifact. The game is exceedingly complex to play or watch and has a frustrating economical model. Valve certainly hasn’t given up on Artifact yet, but it sure seems like the gaming community at large has.

Is anyone on Moot still playing this game?

Any tips for how to get started?

Valve Changes Artifact Balance Philosophy, Nerfs Expensive Cards

Valve previously stated they would never tweak cards aside from some rare exceptions, but they’ve changed their stance. An update that came out yesterday changed eight cards, including some of the most prominent ones. Axe, the game’s most expensive card, has been nerfed slightly. If you bought any of the cards in Artifact that have been nerfed, you can sell it back to valve for its peak price 24 hours before the nerf announcement. Kind of neat. Do you think this shift in philosophy will help Artifact recover some of its playerbase?

New Artifact update grants earning cards in-game

Probably some of the most important news to anyone who's purchased and since not played Artifact: You can now earn cards in-game just by playing.

Artifact 1.1 Update adds Social Features

Despite the faltering player counts, the Artifact team is still pushing on. They released an update today that focuses on improving the social aspects of the game. There is now a chat wheel, in-game and post-game chat, and new automated tournaments. The update announcement also hints at a new update next week that is “focused on a skill-based progression system.” Sounds promising!

Artifact is Struggling to Keep a Playerbase

Artifact, Valve’s digital card game that released late last month, has been steadily losing players. According to SteamCharts and SteamDB the game peaked at 60,740 concurrent players on November 29th. In the last 24 hours, there were only 12,670 concurrent players. That’s a massive falloff for a game that is so new and has all the advantage’s Artifact has. It is uncertain whether Artifact’s issues stem from the game’s complexity, its economic model, or something else. Have you tried Artifact? Are you interested in the game at all? Let us know!

Did Valve butcher Artifact?

I think the game itself is fine but it had all this hype 6 months ago that Valve was finally making another game and then all the hype died down by the time the game actually came out. I didn't really see much in the way of marketing for Artifact either. As with any online game and especially as a card game, it's important to have a large player base so that people can quickly find games and so that there's a wide range of skill levels with healthy populations of each. I feel that even though Artifact at its core is a good game, it will ultimately fail because of the way Valve has approached it.

Nub Question

The Thrill of the Chase

Not sure what exactly I like about opening card packs, but I find myself watching these types of videos on occasion. Pack opening for Artifact is no different though it can never beat out opening physical packs.

Artifact's release has been pretty underwhelming

I've been watching people play on Twitch to decide whether or not to buy the game and basically nobody's playing it. Pretty surprised to see how few viewers there are on release day. I wonder if all the bad rep with the payment structure is what's causing the bad release?

Read "Prelude" - an Artifact comic

To add some fuel to the fire that is Artifact's release today, Valve have announced a comic to read so players may brush up on some Lore before jumping into the game. Hit the link below to get started:

Valve’s Card Game ‘Artifact’ Releases on Steam Today

Artifact is the highly-anticipated digital card game from Valve that has had fans eagerly awaiting today. The game is based on Dota 2 and as such utilizes a three-lane board setup similar to the famous MOBA game. Artifact is designed by legendary game designer Richard Garfield, who famously created Magic: the Gathering 25 years ago, and promises incredibly satisfying strategic gameplay. You can buy the game itself for $20 on the Steam store and you can now buy individual Artifact cards on the marketplace as well.

How is the beta so far?

I've been watching people stream ever since the beta has begun and just can't resist an urge to play the game myself. The problem is, although with numerous attempts, I ended up having no key in my hand😭 I don't know how many of you here on moot has access to the beta, but can any of you share your experience on it? Even just a little bit? I can't seem to grasp the game's overall balance just by looking through streams here and there.

Not bad of a tutorial, for anyone learning the game...

Wish I could skip it tbh, but sucked it up and play it through...

MONETIZATION is coming to Artifact - Awesome...but not really lol

LV.20 S 5mo

God, I'm at awe at everything...

God, even though I was watching since the NDA lifted, I got to say, all of what I saw on twitch with the streams buying packs, doing constructed or draft matches is amazing... So amazing i had to stop looking at streams... Tbh, I'm so not ready for Artifact even though I'll be in Monday's beta... I want to have fun with this game and I believe I will and with some few opportunities coming my way, it makes it overwhelming for me... I Just Don't Know... I'll going to bed earlier than usual tonight to get myself situated, won't make me 100% but close enough... For those without a beta key still, go look around twitter or some twitch streams or even YouTube... There are plenty of the beta testers coming out... Best of luck to anyone... I hope I'm ready to experience it all...
From some streamer I watch...

Semi-embarrassing TIL: Richard Garfield, creator of Magic: The Gathering, designed Artifact.

The title says it all.

I've always loved card games, and I've played many; Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic: The Gathering, and digitally Hearthstone, Shadowverse and also Magic: The Gathering Arena.

Having a ton of hype for Artifact and desperately needing a fresh new card game, I hate to say that I didn't realize/learn this sooner.

November 28th can't come any faster!

I just found out that some people had the beta for over a year

TSM Kripp who's mostly known as a Hearthstone streamer was breaking down Artifact on stream and he mentioned that some people have had access to the game for over a year. Looks like some folks will be having a bigger advantage than we initially thought.
