1. PS5 Unveiled
The PlayStation 5 has been revealed! The upcoming console’s unconventional design has already stirred controversy among loyalists but Sony president Jim Ryan explained the team’s desire to create something “bold and daring [that] would really grace most living areas” and that, in a way, could be considered an artistic, technological type of furniture. Yesterday’s PS5 reveal also unveiled some of the games that will be introduced on the console including Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Gran Turismo 7, and a Horizon Zero Dawn sequel called Horizon Forbidden West.
2. Riot Games Executive Fired A Riot Games executive has been fired after making disparaging remarks about George Floyd. Ron Johnson, the Global Head of Consumer Products at Riot Games, drew instant criticism from the community after it was revealed yesterday that he made a Facebook post which blamed George Floyd for his own death. Although he held an executive position, Johnson had only been with the company for a few months and was immediately fired. In their statement, Riot said that the remarks were “abhorrent and runs directly counter to our values” and pledged a $1 million donation to support justice reform and “long-term solutions to address racial bias.”
3. Resident Evil Surpasses 100M Sales The Resident Evil series just hit a major milestone, surpassing 100 million sales. The survival-horror series, which first debuted in 1996, has encountered a boost of sales due to its recent string of remakes and remasters. In reaching 100 million sales, Resident Evil became the first-ever Capcom series to reach the accomplishment in the company’s 40-year history. Resident Evil 8: Village was unveiled yesterday during IGN’s Summer of Gaming livestream event and is expected to launch in 2021.
4. Modern Warfare Free Weekend Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is having a free weekend from now until June 15. Unfortunately, the event only includes multiplayer and even the access to multiplayer content is limited. Players will only have access to 5 maps in standard multiplayer in addition to 7 maps in the Gunfight playlist. Even if it’s not a comprehensive trial, the free weekend is probably still worth checking out for those of you who already have Warzone installed and have been curious about what the base game has to offer.
5. Destiny 2 Removes SBMM Destiny 2 has removed skill-based matchmaking from many of its PvP modes. Bungie decided to make the change in order to transform the Crucible into “less of a high stakes environment.” Bungie also iterated that this should result in faster queue times and improved connection quality within the matches. For those who are still seeking competition, the Trials of Osiris and the Elimination and Survival playlists will continue to use skill-based matchmaking.
