Among Us | How to Get Away with Murder; Imposter Edition
POV: The 5-second countdown timer is ticking, the red guy tells you to shush, and you see your name painted a menacing crimson. It’s happening, you’re the imposter. Your only mission is to gain everyone’s trust only to stab them in the back and eliminate all the crewmembers, but how do you do it? There are 8 of them and one of you, and one wrong answer will leave you free-flying through the vacuum of space. How do you properly play the role of the imposter? We’ll cover some basic tips that are important to know in order to effectively play the imposter and come out victorious.
As an imposter, the task meter is your timer; you have until it is full to kill everyone. Assuming you make it until the point where you have to take the task meter into account, there are some things to keep in mind. Since you cannot do tasks as an imposter, faking tasks is part of your plight to escape suspicion.
>Effectively faking tasks
Faking tasks is an art, not a science. To fake a task means to stand in front of a task like you would if you were actually doing it, but obviously not completing the task. The best way to go about this is to go to where there are exclamation marks on your map and stand in front of that task, then do not move until the task meter moves. People will generally observe the task meter as you are doing a task when they are watching you fake tasks.
On the same note, if visual tasks are enabled, meaning tasks other people can confirm you are doing, do not fake any visual tasks like garbage or Medbay scans.
Vents are like a security camera for imposters, and also a way to reposition yourself for or after a kill. But you can’t just hop in vents willy nilly at any odd moment. People can see you going into and leaving vents, and smarter crewmates will track where they’ve seen you. So if you are in generator and then you’re all of a sudden in navigation with no probable explanation, you’ll be butchered in the voting process.
~When you should vent and when you shouldn’t
>You should vent when:
You’ve killed someone in a one-way passage place, meaning you can only leave through the way you came in. If you are unlucky enough to walk out of there and someone walks in, you’re toast.
>When you want to sneak up on someone who has been running from you, or someone that is isolated.
>When you want to be in two places at once. For instance, if you are alone in oxygen, but you want to kill someone in comms while still keeping your alibi in oxygen. You would vent there, kill them, then vent back and your alibi is in place as long as someone saw you go into oxygen, but never saw you come out.
As a unique attribute gifted to the killer, the ability to Sabotage can be your greatest strategic weapon to use against coordinated crewmates. Whether it is to split them apart, deny information, or to scramble their formation, sabotaging has a way of helping you with that.
When the game gets to the point of everyone following each other to do tasks, sabotaging the Seismic stabilizers is a sure-fire way to split people up, but it is very choreographed so be careful with your kills that way.
Sabotaging the lights when everyone is in an open space is a great way to kill someone openly. This would generally apply when everyone is kind of spread out, but still in the same general area.
Sabotaging doors when people walk through them to isolate or separate them from the group will also set you up for stealthy kills or the perfect framing of someone else.
Part of being an imposter, probably the most important part, is killing crewmates. It’s rather simple to kill people, the hard part is getting away with it.
>Setting up the perfect murder
The perfect murder consists of a few things, time, place, and a seemingly rock-solid alibi. You want your victim to be isolated and preferably discovered at the latest time possible. If everyone is going right side and you see someone going left, vent over or stealthily follow the person. If you are seen following the person, however, you will be the first voted off.
You can similarly use two people together to your advantage. When they inevitably separate, you vent in and kill one and vent out. It is a great way to frame someone and if your team is paying attention, they may do all the work for you without you having to incite anything.
>Killing in conjunction with your sabotage
You don’t always have to chase your kills, sometimes they will just come to you. Sabotaging is a great way to have your prey walk right into your mouth without much effort. When you sabotage something, someone will have to fix it. So if you wait at the places you sabotaged, someone will show up eventually. You should be careful though because if more than one person comes, you will be up for suspicion for even being there, let alone not fixing what you sabotaged.
Here are some things to note when killing people:
>Don’t kill someone you were the last one spotted with.
>Don't kill people in hallways, especially in front of cameras. The body will be found quite fast there.
> If you kill someone in a closed room, vent out, but do so to a close place so you can account for how you got there.
>Killing people in harder to access places or infrequently visited places are optimal. This includes spawn, decontamination, storage, and fuel.
>When someone asks you where you were, never say you were in medbay doing a scan. It is just a meme now that will get you instantly voted off. There is an exception if someone is there to vouch for you though.
The voting process is where the real mind games start, and you have to be prepared to vow your innocence. This doesn’t mean that you keep insisting you are innocent, but that others insist that you are. Voting phase deception is a whole other conversation and you have to set yourself up for that beforehand as well. I will just say these two things:
>Don’t be afraid to vouch for a fellow imposter if you guys have been together for a while and the kill is quite old
>Don’t be afraid to frame an innocent crewmate if they’ve done something sketchy that is hard to explain
I've written a bit more in-depth about setting up this sort of thing here: https://moot.us/lounges/379/boards/1784/posts/4696620/among-us-feigning-innocence-imposter-edition
Hopefully, with this, you’ll slip under many more radars and bring back the win for the imposter team. Let me know what sort of strategies have worked out for you when you had the chance to be an imposter. Happy homicide, my imposter students.
If you're not ruining friendships, you're playing the game wrong.
Among Us | Hail Marys for Hectic Situations; Imposter Edition
Among Us is a game of cat and mouse with the roles constantly in flux. Sometimes you’re the big bad imposter killing people at will, and other times you’re a timid mouse just trying not to get caught. You will sometimes find yourself into what DBD players would call an End Game Collapse where you have to kill people before the tasks are all finished. In this lesson, we’ll be going over what you can do to get out of these desperate situations and how to turn out a win.
A common scenario you may find yourself in is being seen venting, which can be very incriminating if someone accuses you of that and you’ll generally chase this person down to kill them. First of all, stop doing that. You don’t need to chase them, in fact, you don’t even need to fear that person for one simple reason, sabotage. Sabotaging oxygen or generators disables the ability to call an emergency meeting and at that time you can kill the person or even leave them be and call the meeting yourself to accuse them of venting. It is just that simple.
Another situation you may find yourself in is an either-or vote, where they voted someone and now they are going to vote for you next after the meeting cooldown is down. So you are literally living on borrowed time and you’ll only last as long as the vote cooldown. Again, sabotage is your way out, but you’ll need to do a bit more than that. Depending on how many people are left, you’ll have to go for an oxygen or seismic/generator play where you kill everyone in one fell swoop. But what does an oxygen play like this look like? If you’re alone, things get much harder. Basically, you will be stalling the crewmates as long as possible by killing and sabotaging doors and lights. First, you will draw them away from oxygen with a generator sabotage which is on the other side of the map, then you will lock them inside and sabotage oxygen. So you let one person do one side, and thanks to something called distribution of responsibility, after the first two crewmates go to deal with it, everyone else will likely sit back up until the moment it is too late. So as long as you kill one while they are doing oxygen and stall the rest, the win is yours.
Okay, this one isn’t any sort of big brain play or anything, and actually, it is quite common. When you are caught red-handed killing people, which should never happen if you read my previous guides, but if it happens report the body first and blame it on the person that caught you. Whoever has that megaphone by their name has greater credibility than the one that doesn’t. This is assuming neither of your had prior sus before that point.
Building a Graveyard:
Sometimes you will have already killed someone you shouldn’t have, ie someone you were just seen with. And you will have a tough decision to make, either guard the body and kill the next person that comes, but you’ll be on thin ice in the meantime, or kill the person that last saw you. Now what you decide to do should depend on one thing, your kill cooldown. If you have a low kill cooldown, you can just wait on the body, and kill the next person that comes in. If you have a high kill cooldown, you will have to kill the person that saw you together last.
In the meantime, however, you will have to work nonstop to divert people from the body, so you’ll have to vent somewhere else and sabotage like your life depends on it, because it does. Say that you killed someone in electrical, then sabotage everything but lights. The further away, the better. While your kill cooldown is ticking, track down whoever saw you and snuff him out asap. Don’t follow the person, just confirm their location. You can always vent to them so you don’t find yourself directly associated with another kill. By this time, someone will have probably found the first body, but they’ll have no leads on such an old kill, and the only person to link you to it is dead.
What have you done to get out of dire situations as an imposter? Feel free to include even the ones that didn’t work, as they may end up working out for someone else. And if you have any questions about strategies in specific situations, feel free to drop a question in the comments and I’ll make sure to get back to you.
Merry murking, my imposter disciples.
Among Us Lore: The Beginning of a Nightmare (Part 1)
Andromeda, Quadrant 44T2F, In Orbit of HIP 13044
Inside of a space station hovering around a metallic planet, a panicked atmosphere surrounded the crew members.
“What’s the status report?” an authoritative voice asked. It was the captain of the ship. Crewmembers would be selected from birth and were without names, they only went by colors. Each ship out on an expedition had 10 members, each with their own color and ship number. Captain red looked at his panicked crewmembers with a calm face, as to reassure them.
Purple stepped forward and said in a somber voice, “The reactors are on a meltdown, there’s nothing we can do to save the ship. I say we have a minute at best, 45 seconds if we are being grim.” Purple anxiously twiddled her fingers.
“Then our only option is to use the escape pods and regroup at the nearest emergency space center and continue our expiration of HIP 13044.” Captain Red commanded.
All the various crewmembers nodded their heads in agreement and quickly made off for their respective escape pods as red lights flashed and sirens wailed indicating the critical state the ship was in.
“When we get out there, our comms will probably be down due to interference from HIP 13044’s gravitational field so we won’t be able to communicate, be safe. Follow behind me and everything should go according to plan.” Red left these words as he ejected his escape pod and floated out into space.
The other crewmembers immediately ejected as well and all got into a formation. Just as the last 4 colors ejected, the space ship exploded into fiery flames. The formation was broken and the escape pods were scattered in each direction. Luckily, each escape pod had a forcefield, so they sustained very little damage. The problem now was that the formation had been broken and each escape pod had scattered beyond the line of sight. With no communication, they would just have to trust in each other to make it to the emergency space station on their own.
With each crewmember coming to the same conclusion, they all set off on their way. Not all of the crewmembers were separated, however. Red and Cyan both were blown in the same direction, so they quickly regrouped.
While they could not communicate with each other, the tacit understanding between them was more than enough.
As they were flying, they passed by an exceptionally large asteroid. If only they had known that this would be the end of their journey. Four sinister eyes followed the two escape pods with a ruthless and bloodthirsty gaze. The two pairs of eyes looked at each other, then flittered off towards the two escape pods.
At nearly the same time, both Captain Red and Cyan felt their pods shake and the lights inside dimmed.
“What the…” Cyan looked out of his window to see what caused the shaking but to no
“Must have been a stray rock or something,” Cyan shook it off but just then, a tentacle came through the air duct and wrenched his neck until a crack could be heard. Cyan’s lifeless body slumped over to the side. An indescribable creature crawled entirely through the ventilation system and slowly entered the spacesuit as it consumed Cyan’s body, then assumed his appearance and along with it his memories and identity. “Cyan” licked his lips in delight at the information that there were 8 others like him all heading to the same place.
The same scene was playing out at Captain Red’s escape pod as well, and both lifeforms decided to feast on the other 8 crewmembers heading for the emergency space station.
With the memories of their victims in tow, they clumsily drove the escape pods in the indicated direction of the space station.
Purple was the first to make it to the space station, and as the team technician, she went around the ship to make sure all functions were operational. Close behind followed Blue, Orange, and Pink separately. They helped Purple with any repairs that needed to be done to ensure the other crewmember’s safety. The twins White and Black came together since they left in the same escape pod.
Lime and Green hadn’t stopped searching for each other since the split, so they eventually found made contact. They were a couple from birth, so one wouldn’t leave without the other. This made them lag behind the majority of the other crewmates by a lot.
The “crewmates” to make it to the scene were of course, “Red” and “Cyan”. Their steering of the escape pods had become much more natural over the course of the journey, so visually there was nothing suspicious about their approach. The initial mishap the original Cyan and Red got into, as well as the new “Cyan” and “Red” getting used to the controls had delayed them more than the rest of the crew.
“Captain Red and Cyan have made it safely!” Pink cheerily screeched as she saw the two escape pods approaching. She zoomed over to the hatch to welcome them.
“Captain, what took you guys so long?” Pink tilted her head to the side, clearly confused.
“I-it’s nothing.” a coarse voice echoed from the spacesuit.
“Captain, what happened to your voice?” Pink was frightened by the unfamiliar, rough voice that came from her Captain’s suit.
“Red” paused for a moment, then in the authoritative voice that each crewmate recognized as their leader’s he said, “I am just thirsty,” Red said confidently.
“Oh okay…” Pink trusted the Captain, so she did not read much into it anymore.
“Lead the way,” Captain “Red” gestured Pink that was twiddling her fingers.
“Ah, right!” Pink jumped to attention and lead the two “crewmembers” towards where the rest of the crewmates were.
The entire time, Cyan hadn’t said a word and quietly followed on the heels of “Red” and Pink.
As they were walking in the hallway, Pink would look back inquisitively at “Red” with flushed cheeks. She had quite the crush on Captain Red, his confidence attracted her. Snapping out of her daze, she noticed something off. She hesitantly said, “C-captain, are going to keep your helmet on?”
“Red” stopped for a moment, then he slowly put his hands on each side of the helmet and slowly removed it. A handsome, well-defined face was brought into view. He looked to be in his late 20s, with eyebrows that gave off a serious aura. Cyan followed suit by removing his helmet. His appearance was nothing to write home about, quite nondescript indeed.
Pink flashed “Red” an embarrassed smile and quickly turned around, continuing to lead the way. An evil smile crossed “Red’s” face but it quickly returned to his normally expressionless face.
Soon they came into a large space filled with seats and tables, it was a cafeteria. All the other crewmates were sitting down around two tables eating. They all waved towards “Red” and “Cyan” as they approached the table. “Red” and “Cyan” nearly couldn’t control themselves as they saw how many crewmates there were. They were visibly disturbed but quickly got their composure back. Fortunately, they were quite far from the group at this moment, so no one noticed.
White and Black turned to “Red” and said at the same time, “Captain, what took you so long?”
Everyone stopped eating and turned to “Red” as they were all interested in his answer. Red shook his head and waved them off. They knew that no matter how they questioned, they wouldn’t get an answer out of “Red” and no one dared push the captain further. So everyone pushed the question out of their minds.
After eating, each crewmember went off to their lodging to get some rest as it had been a long day. After everyone cleared out, “Red” and “Cyan” looked at each other, nodded, then went their separate ways.
“Captain!” Pink cheerily tugged on “Red’s” sleeve and gave him a cheeky smile. The girl had come out of seemingly nowhere.
“You probably don’t know where the living quarters are, let me show you! We saved the biggest one for you.” The energetic Pink was bouncing on the balls of her feet.
“Sure,” “Red” gave a slight smile.
As they approached the room, Pink’s cheeks became redder and redder, basically turning more like a tomato with each step. Finally, they made it to the room.
“Here’s your living quarters, Captain,” Pink said as if under some sort of stress.
“Mmm,” “Red” nodded in response.
Pink still left despite her having no reason to linger. “Red” raised his eyebrows.
“Is there anything else that you need?” “Red” asked the fidgeting Pink.
“Me? Ah! N-no I-I-I just…” Pink stuttered incoherently. She was clearly quite distraught.
“Red” squinted his eyes, then smile and said, “Would you like to come in?”
Pink’s face seemed as if it would explode from the influx of blood that rushed to her head. “C-c-come in-n-n!?!?” Pink was on the verge of a meltdown.
‘This is just how it happened in my imagination..,’ Pink was a mess for quite a while. In the end, she did agree.
“Red’s” emotionless eyes scanned the room, this would be his base of operations for the time being.
“Captain, there are an extra set of clothes in the closet for you, I’ll get them.” Pink anxiously looked for something to break the intense silence. As she turned her back, “Red’s” eyes suddenly dilated as he stared at the defenseless Pink’s back.
To be continued...
Among Us | Proving Your Innocence; Crewmate Archives
As the majority of you know, most of the time you are going to be playing Among Us is as a crewmate. Among Us is a game about gaining and manipulating trust, the first step is acquiring the trust. Whether you play with the same group of friends or with randoms, the most consistent way to convince people is through logic. So how do you go about gaining the trust of someone you just screwed over last round as an imposter?
Gaining trust as a crewmate is exceptionally similar to doing so as an imposter, the only difference is consistency.
Before gaining someone’s trust, that person has to be worth trusting, so we’ll first go about how to find someone trustworthy. You don’t want to be following around an imposter. So what makes a trustworthy person? Well, they will have done a few tasks in succession. Imposters may fake a task, at most two, but almost never three in a row. If you find yourself following someone running around like a headless chicken with no apparent goal in sight, run.
In the case of visual tasks being in play, it becomes much easier to find someone to trust. If you see them do a Medbay scan or garbage disposal, just stick with that person. One thing to remember though, never do your visual tasks alone. It is literally a trust card that guarantees a vouch.
Now that you have found someone that you can trust yourself, stick with that person as much as possible. This doesn’t mean neglect your tasks, but do the ones you need to do as you pass by them while following them. The earlier in the game you establish someone to trust, the easier it will be to narrow the search for an imposter.
Now that they’ve gained your trust, how do you gain theirs? Simple, just stick with them. There will be many situations where if you were an imposter, you could have killed them clean. Simply the fact that you haven’t should be more than enough, not to mention you’ll be each other's alibi for any kills to come.
This doesn’t necessarily have to be a one-person thing either, you can try to confirm multiple people along the course of the game, but you are going to have to stick with one of them if you want to ensure your own safety. Do note that while you are still testing the trustworthiness of a player, assume that they are the imposter and keep your distance to them in mind. Don’t follow anyone into electrical before you have an idea of whether or not they can be trusted.
Another way to prove your innocence is to be out in the open, though this may get you killed. By out in the open, I don’t mean literally standing there waiting for death, but consistently on essential surveillance tools like cameras, admin, logs, or vitals. If you are on cameras specifically, everyone who walks through a hallway can vouch for where you are.
Hopefully, this gives you an idea of what you need to do in order to clear your name in the beginning of the game. What’s something that you have done to earn someone’s trust, as an imposter or otherwise? Share your stories with the squad in the comments below.
Idk if it's funny it's more of a fact than a meme, and um about the give away I'll announce who's the winner in 5 hours
Among Us | Deviance After Death; Imposter Edition
Sometimes it isn’t in the cards for you to survive the game as an imposter. Maybe you vented in front of someone, rubbed someone the wrong way, said something sus, or even were wrongly accused and you find yourself blasted off like team rocket. Whatever the case may be, you’re dead now and can no longer wrench the life out of those despicable crewmates, but is that the end? Do you just put away your team Imposter hat and AFK? The answer to that question is no. The getting ejected out of the space lock is not the end of the road for you, the game can still be salvaged. So how do you clutch a win for team imposter when you no longer have the means to kill? Well if your other imposter isn’t a complete donkey, there is a lot you can do actually.
So what is your job as a dead imposter? You’ve already failed your priority task which is to kill everyone, so just focus on your secondary task, sabotage. Since you have the time and the flexibility to basically be anywhere you want, you don’t have to be picky about your sabotaging, but you have to be smart.
There are a few things that you are trying to accomplish when sabotaging while you’re dead and that is separating crewmates, and framing innocents.
So let’s start with the first one, separating crewmates. Let’s start with the why before we get to the how. Why would you want to separate the crewmates from each other? The obvious answer is so the other imposter can kill them, but there is a more subtle answer to that question. It is to have fewer people vouching for each other. If they aren’t together, how can they vouch for each other and how can they trust that they aren’t the imposter when they haven’t been together the entire time? Your job is to stir up conflict where there originally wasn’t any.
How would you go about separating the crewmates?
The obvious and easier way to separate crewmates is to sabotage things that take two people to fix like seismic and oxygen. This is simple, but it only ensures that two people go that way, what about when you’re dealing with people that dare take the risk to complete tasks or ignore it altogether? You have to get creative with the timing of your sabotages. In particular, door sabotages. If two people are walking together and one is slightly lagging behind, you have to close the door on the slower one. The one going faster will generally not wait for the one behind the door and you’ve effectively broken up a trusting marriage just like that. The one that got locked in may even suspect the one they were following was trying to shake them off with that. It would work really well if the person was following them to confirm they weren’t the imposter. That’s one of the many ways you can sow distrust and discord among the crewmates while you’re a dead imposter.
A more proactive approach to playing as a dead imposter is to play a direct supporting role to your fellow imposter. What does that look like? Basically, you will be keeping crewmates away from old kills for as long as possible. Do this by sabotaging lights, closing off doors that lead to the body, and simply diverting attention over to other sabotaged tasks like oxygen if they are away from the body. Your main objective in this game of cat and mouse is to give your other imposter as much time as they can to kill. After about 2 or so bodies this becomes much harder, but hopefully, by that time you will have framed a few innocent souls to take the blame or created enough chaos to blur the truth.
Happy hampering, my imposter disciples.
