Ryan's Always Right: The Division 2
The Division 2 is a third-person looter-shooter set in a post-apocalyptic version of Washington DC. Taking place just months after the events of the original game, we play as a pivotal member of an elite team of soldiers known as The Division, in an effort to restore order and help rebuild the nation after it has been ravaged by a smallpox epidemic.
After waiting an uncomfortably long time for the game to load and sitting through an absurd amount of cutscenes, the player enters into a world that, despite being ravaged by disease, is absolutely gorgeous. Upon finishing the basic tutorial, we leave the White House and are free to explore the nation’s capital. The attention to detail in terms of artwork and environment cannot be understated. Every new location was lush, beautiful, and wonderfully designed. One minute I’m in Chinatown, the next I’m fighting bad guys on a movie set. It’s really easy to just get lost in the landscapes and the visual satisfaction of exploring the city was easily one of my favorite parts of the game.
It certainly helps that while you explore these gorgeous, unique environments, the gameplay quality never diminishes. The Division 2 isn’t like DOOM where you can just run around and destroy all your enemies like an unkillable demigod. You have to sit behind cover, play strategically, and take your time in engagements. Normally this type of playstyle is pretty boring (to me at least), but The Division 2 manages to pull it off flawlessly. Even though you have to play behind cover, the pacing of the game is frenetic and there’s never a lull in action.
While I have no doubt that The Division 2 can be enjoyed solo, it’s very clear that this game is designed to be played with friends. I started off in a duo, but we quickly brought 2 more friends on board for a full squad of 4. Although the gameplay is definitely fun, as a looter-shooter you essentially end up doing the same thing over and over again. This makes playing with friends a significantly better experience, as your interactions with each other can keep the game fresh and also brings tangible benefits (like the ability to heal and revive each other).
It’s no secret that looter-shooters have an inherent degree of tedium, but The Division 2 is fairly unique in this regard. Whereas most games of this genre make upgrading gear the main focal point and a constant struggle, it’s an absolute breeze in The Division 2. I got at least one good piece of loot in nearly every single engagement I encountered, no matter how small. That said, The Division 2 still has its fair share of tedium; it just occurs in an entirely different way. It takes forever for the game to load, there’s tons of boring cutscenes, they make you hold down the action button for far too long, and there’s plenty of pointless doors that serve no purpose other than to artificially inflate the length of missions.
This brings me to the campaign. I’m just gonna tell it to you straight: the story in this game sucks, and it has virtually 0 redeeming qualities whatsoever. The pacing sucks. The writing sucks. The cutscenes suck. In fact, the cutscenes are so bad that your own character refuses to participate in them. Seriously, your character does not talk a single time throughout the entire game. I have never in my life seen a more lifeless main character with less personality than in The Division 2. This is a game that is 100% carried by its gameplay. Thankfully there is plenty of gameplay to go around, and your options for exciting things to do only increase after reaching level 30 and completing the main story line.
In short, I would consider The Division 2 a fun game, but not necessarily a good one. It’s visually stunning and great to play with friends, but there are many glaring issues that would be genuinely annoying and frustrating if I wasn’t so busy laughing about them with my friends. At its normal sticker price of $60, I wouldn’t recommend the game. However, it’s currently on sale for just $2.99 from the Ubisoft store which is an absolute steal. The game is free to play this weekend and the sale only lasts until March 2, so grab a couple of friends and give it a shot; it’s definitely worth it.
Ryan’s Rating: 3.5/5
The Division 2 is available on PC, Xbox, PS4, and Stadia.
Looking for at least 2 for my clan.
