Animal Crossing's Time-Based System is Outdated

Everyone’s clammering to play the new Animal Crossing, the game that folks have been waiting for, especially now that most players have the free time to invest into the game. It’s hard not to go on social media without tripping over a post about someone’s village or invite offers to be friends online. Yet, it seems that in the excitement, many users have overlooked what I see as a serious issue that still plagues the game and makes it a generally frustrating experience; the time-based system.

I remember the first time I booted up the original Animal Crossing on the GameCube during a holiday. What a special time it was in my village around Halloween, with characters dressing up, presents to be obtained, and unique interactions to be had. It was a great afternoon spent with my electronic pals, giving me a taste of the magic Animal Crossing can have.

For other holidays, however, booting up the game became more of a hassle. One did not simply run off to play a video game in the middle of Easter or Christmas, no sir. There were relatives to see, real presents to be opened, and sometimes travel as we made our way to whoever was hosting. So by the time we got home, it was bedtime, and there was no way to obtain those cool items or to see what my town might look like that one time a year.

Now that I’m an adult, this is, surprisingly, still a problem. In a day and age where we’re always moving and there’s constantly stuff that needs to get done, I don’t have the time to log in every day. Maybe a couple of weeks will go by when I can’t get to my town, after which the game guilts me for having been away for so long. Weeds sprout, villagers are sad, and the efforts needed to restore my world to its former glory seems so daunting I don’t bother. Animal Crossing treats its players in the same way something like Hearthstone does, trying to ingrain the idea that this game is a lifestyle. But unlike Hearthstone, I already paid $60 for this game; I don’t want to feel like the game is controlling when I should play.

And now that you can’t change the time on the Switch, this becomes all the more pressing. Now you *have* to play on each and every holiday or risking losing free stuff. Now you *have* to log in every few days or feel the wrath of the townsfolk scorned. Much like real life, Animal Crossing looks to give you responsibilities that you have to return to again and again, becoming chores more than fun.

Just the other day, my friend Kat was complaining to me that, after an hour or so of playing, she had exhausted all the things she could do in Animal Crossing: New Horizons that day because the items she bought, such as the shovel, needed to do many activities wouldn’t “arrive” in the digital, in-game store until the next day. The game was telling her she had to wait to have fun for no reason other than to immerse her into the illusion that in-game time was passing.

In this way, the time-based system, while providing some neat ideas back in the day, hampers an otherwise enjoyable gaming experience. And what’s the best solution? To be honest, I’m not sure. But other games have found great ways of handling this.

Look at Stardew Valley. Players play in a time-based world, but each day only lasts 15 minutes or so, and when players feel like they have nothing more to do, they can go to bed to start the next day. Features like this could help still have that in-game time illusion while not making me wait 24 actual hours to get an item to progress in the activities I want to do.

One thing’s for sure, the way Animal Crossing handles things now is not consumer-friendly, pressuring people with limited time on their hands to play daily or face the consequences. And I for one don’t like to be held hostage by my digital overlords, even if they’re a bunch of cute raccoons.

What do you think? Is the time-based system still just as good as it was back in the day, or is it something you can’t stand to deal with anymore? Let me know in the comments, I’d be curious to hear your experiences with it.

[Tip] Wanna find a Stringfish? Let's find rare fishes fast and easily

Hey, how’s your island?

It’s almost the end of March. There are several fishes which can only be found until March, like Sturgeon (Northern Hemisphere) so you must catch them before March is over. However, most of them are very hard to find and you’ll be suffered to fish them.

But there is a way to force them to appear easily, like a fish farm.

Before, we need to know the respawn system of ACNH. There are three groups of ACNH creatures. River fish, sea fish, bug. Each group shares a respawn number threshold. River fish, Clifftop & River & Pond & Mouth share the threshold together. Sea fish, Sea & Pier share it together. Bug, all types of bug shares the threshold.

Additionally, creatures will not respawn on your sight. For example, if you keep roaming clifftop around, none of the clifftop fishes will be respawned. But the game system always fulfills the respawn threshold so the fishes will be respawned out of your sight. If the clifftop is on your sight, fishes will appear on the river or river mouth. If both the clifftop & river is on your sight, most of the fishes will be respawned on the river mouth.

With this system, now Let’s see how to aim for rare fishes.

Visit an island with Nook Miles Ticket. The island must have a river, better to have clifftop and pond as well for various rare fishes.
Once you reach the island, you’ll see many fishes in the river. Check the size of the shadows and there’s no target you want, drive them out to respawn other fishes. To drive fishes out, run near them, or swing a net to the river, use a vaulting pole near them, or use a fishing rod can pull it back after the fish recognized it.

Unnecessary fishes will be disappeared and other fishes will be respawned out of your sight.

This is the point. You must set a target you want. For example, if you want to get Sturgeon, the river mouth should be out of your sight until you drive unnecessary fishes out enough. If you keep removing fishes from except a target area (Pond, Clifftop, River), many fishes will be in the target area.

Visit the target area and check if the target is there. Sturgeon’s shadow size is 6 (biggest). Only sturgeon has that size of shadow in the river mouth. If there’s a huge shadow in the river mouth, that is a sturgeon.

In the same way, you can aim for any rare fishes like Golden Trout or Stringfish. If you’re looking for the clifftop rare fishes, try not to clifftop on your sight and roaming around the map, drive fishes in the river & pond & mouth out, then visit the clifftop. If there’s no target, repeat this.

To do this, you need to know the size of each fish’s shadow so that you’ll save your time.

You can do this to Sea or Pier fishes, but it will be harder and take longer because the sea area is too big. You need to be patient for Sea & Pier fishes.

There are more fishes that only appear until March, but they are common. These 2, especially Stringfish is extremely hard to find so try this tip and catch them before April!

Don’t Make These Animal Crossing Mistakes

It’s day five of playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons. As an Animal Crossing newbie, I had no idea what to expect. I saw the memes and one of my best friends plays the game, so I was sold on it. Also, it’s day 7 of quarantine for us, so Animal Crossing is really helping get us through it. 🍎s are my native fruit and the name of my island is Ratopia. 🐀

Since I’m new to the game, I was bound to make some mistakes. I honestly didn’t realize how many ways I could make poor in-game choices, but boy-o-boy, it was a lot. I’m going to share with you guys some of the worst mistakes I made, so you can learn and maybe even laugh with me. 😂

Mistake number one - I didn’t realize in the beginning that only one part of my map would be accessible to me in the first part of the game. When it came to map layouts I chose the one I felt gave off the best aesthetics. I had no idea that players are unable to cross water, until later game-play. I accidentally confined myself to a very small portion of my island 🌴 limiting my resources. Thus, making it slightly more difficult on myself to achieve goals. Another unfortunate issue I faced with this decision was having to clump everything very closely together. My museum, shop, town square, and villager houses are within spitting distance of each other.

Mistake number two - Fishing 🎣 is a task that I did not expect to be difficult to grasp, but admittedly I did have trouble. I got lucky on the first two tries and thought I was a master fisherman. Alas, I struggled and lost many fish in my first few hours playing. Originally, I thought you were supposed to reel the fish in on their first bite. Turns out, I was wrong. Pro tip - The correct way to fish is to wait for your bobber to go under the water before reeling in your fish.

Mistake number three - I sold the wasper nest. At the time I did not have the DIY recipe for medication, so I hit Timmy up and he offered me some cold hard cash. 💰 When I realized what I had done, it was too late. I got hit with a second wasp swarm and fainted. Remember folks, pocket those wasp nests.

Mistake number four - When I upgraded my axe 🪓 I was so excited that I wouldn’t have to keep making them as they broke! Naturally, I ran around my island and smacked all of the trees. I was about 6 trees deep when I realized I was cutting them down and they wouldn’t grow back. Speaking of tree mistakes, another thing I did was uproot a ton of trees to make a clearing. Then I sold them to Timmy, because 200 bells is 200 bells. Am I right? It’s a little more difficult to find wood on the island these days.

Mistake number five - Possibly my most embarrassing mistake of them all is the time that I took my pants off and ran around for a good hour before figuring out how to put them back on. I also had music notes 🎶 on my cheeks for hours before figuring out how to take them off. I can now proudly say I have mastered clothing and conquered the pro design app.

Did you make any major mistakes playing the new game? Let me know in the comments! I’d love to hear about any mishaps or funny situations you’ve gotten your characters into! Catch you again next time with some tips on how to quickly get Nook Miles to pay off your island. Happy Gaming!

Paige's Pointers: How To Pay Off Your Island With Nook Miles Quickly

Hello, and welcome to this week’s segment of Paige’s Pointers! I’m Paige and I have a crack-like addiction to Animal Crossing. I can’t live without it. I breathe, sleep, and bathe in Animal Crossing, QR Codes, Memes, and the like. Let’s talk a little about the in-game currency system. 💰There are two forms of currency - Bells 🔔 & Nook Miles 💵 Today I’m going to cover Nook Miles.

What are they? Nook Miles is the in-game currency used to pay off your first loan. After paying for your island 🌴 with Nook Miles there are a few other cool things you can grab with them. Different hairstyles and colors, better tool recipes, and tickets to mystery islands await!!
So, if you’re just starting out, and are impatient like me, scraping together enough Nook Miles to pay for your island is your first objective. There are many ways to earn them, including a few ways that maybe wouldn’t come to mind! I’m going to give you a few pointers on how to get enough Miles to pay off your island as fast as possible!
At the beginning of the game, you are very limited in earning Nook Miles. You also probably don’t have very many tools. 🔨 Two tools will help you the most! Craft a handy dandy fishing rod 🎣 and a flimsy net! 🦋 Fishing and catching bugs to turn in to Tom Nook will gain you Miles rapidly.

Breaking tools can be a pain, but it’s actually a useful strategy! You can gain Nook Miles for breaking them. Crafting them again can be frustrating, but you also get Nook Miles for crafting! It’s a never-ending cycle, but it will pay off!

Checking in to the Nook terminal in the town square will award you Nook Miles daily. Each day you check-in, you are awarded more. It caps out at 300 when you get to day 6 or 7. Buying and selling sometimes awards Nook Miles.

Some things that award Nook Miles you may not expect are being stung by wasps and fainting from a tarantula 🕷 bite. Even the not so fun stuff in Animal Crossing rewards you! Another one is checking and opening the mail! Interacting with your villagers is another helpful tip.

The thing I found most helpful is getting down a solid routine. After figuring out a routine, I would recommend repeating it daily to best grow your island. Key elements in a flourishing island are routines, repetition, and reaping the rewards!!

Do you have any advice for the beginning stage of gameplay to get the max amount of Nook Miles? Did you have a hard time getting your Nook Miles quickly? Agree with this list? Let me know in the comments!

[Tip] How to get Golden Tools?

Hey, how’s your island?

Today, I want to introduce how to get the ‘Golden Tools’.

There are gold versions of each tool. It requires a gold nugget and an iron version of the tools. You can find gold nuggets via hitting rocks, but they’re so rare to find. Gold nugget’s price is 10,000 Bells but do not sell them because various DIY recipes require gold nuggets.

Unlike the previous series, the golden tools in ACNH are not unbreakable. All golden tools have 200 durability.

1) Golden Axe
To get the recipe: Break the axes for 100 times
Materials: 1 Axe, 1 Gold Nugget

It’s doesn’t matter about the quality of the axes. So the easiest way to do this is by crafting Flimsy Axes. Once you cleared the condition, you’ll get the recipe of Golden Axe.

2) Golden Shovel
To get the recipe: Help Gulliver for 30 times
Materials: 1 Shovel, 1 Gold Nugget

Sometimes you can find a fainted seagull, Gulliver. If you keep talking to him, he asks you a favor that dig up the seaside beach and find 5 Communicator Parts to repair his Nook Phone. This will be counted as 1 to help him. Repeat this 30 times, then he’ll send you a mail with the recipe.

Gulliver appears on your beach at least once a 10 days, could be more often. If you’re lucky, you can do this in 30 days but on the other hand, if you’re super unlucky, it will take 300 days!

3) Golden Fishing Rod
To get the recipe: Complete the Critterpedia Fish section
Materials: 1 Fishing Rod + 1 Gold Nugget

It’s simple but hard. Complete the Critterpedia Fish section, then you’ll get the recipe of Golden Fishing Rod. There are so many fishes that won’t appear during March or April so you need to check the fish’s info and try to catch them all.

To see detail fishes info, check this post.

4) Golden Bug Net
To get the recipe: Complete the Critterpedia Bug section
Materials: 1 Bug Net + 1 Gold Nugget

Similar to the Golden Fishing Rod. Complete the Critterpedia Bug section.

Check this post to see detail bugs info.

5) Golden Watering Can
To get the recipe: Get Five Star island rating
Materials: 1 Watering Can + 1 Gold Nugget

If you managed your island enough, Isabelle will tell your island’s rating. If you reached 5 Star rating, she’ll give you this recipe.

6) Golden Slingshot
Get this recipe is still a mystery.

Someone said that we need to shoot 100 balloons, but it wasn’t. I’ve shooted 300 balloons and got the Nook Miles achievement but I did not get the recipe of Golden Slingshot.

Others said to shoot the rare balloon, which is colored gold. In the previous series, If we shoot 16 or more ballons in a day, a golden balloon appeared rarely. However, there are so many changed in ACNH from the previous series so I’m not sure this still working in ACNH. I’ve shooted more than 16 balloons per day of course but did not find any golden balloon yet.

[Tip] Let's get Seasonal Materials & Star Fragments

Hey, how’s your Island?

April is coming in real life, ACNH as well.

Unlike woods or rocks, there are some special materials which are seasonal, or obtained in a different way.

First, I’m gonna introduce 2 seasonal materials.

1) Young Spring Bamboo
I think you’ve obtained this material already, Young Spring Bamboo.

This material can be obtained from Bamboo Tree during Spring season. You can get them by hitting a grown Bamboo Tree with an axe. Bamboo Trees can only be found in Nook Miles Ticket Island, Bamboo Island.

When you hit a Bamboo Tree with an axe, both regular Bamboo and Young Spring Bamboo will randomly drop from the bamboo tree. Young Spring Bamboo is a little rarer than regular Bamboo.

I recommend you to use Flimsy Axe or Stone Axe rather than Axe because Axe will chop down the Bamboo Tree. Flimsy Axe or Stone Axe will not chop down the trees so you can get the Bamboo in next day again.

Also, you can bring Bamboo Trees to your island via eating fruits and dig up them with a shovel. If you bring enough Bamboo Trees to your island, you can farm them freely.

Bamboo shoots can only be found in Bamboo Island, dig up the fossiled ground.

Here are the lists of Young Spring Bamboo DIY Recipe.

2) Cherry Blossom Petal
Cherry Blossom Petals will appear in the early spring and are found near trees with Cherry Blossoms in them. The petals are floating around the map so you need to swing a Net to catch them, just like catching bugs.

However, if you miss the swing for 2 times, the cherry blossom petal what you aimed for will disappear.

Cherry Blossom Petals will not appear from Pine Trees or Fruit Trees. In April, all normal trees will turn into Cherry Blossom Trees so it won’t be a big matter.

In April 1st, Isabelle (or Tom Nook before you upgrade the Resident Service) will teach you the Outdoor Picnic Set DIY recipe. You can get more Cherry Blossom Petal DIY recipes via other villagers, ballooned gift, messaged bottle.

3) Star Fragment
If you happen to see Celeste the Owl wandering around your town, Meteor Shower event will happen in ACNH.

At clear night (not when it’s raining), sometimes Meteor Shower event occures. If a Meteor Shower is happening above your town, you can wish on the shooting stars as they fly across the sky via press A button. Make sure that you’re not holding any tools, and use the right analog stick to look up into the sky. Ideally, you should be positioned so that the sky isn’t blocked by buildings or trees.

Shooting stars tend to happen in batches, so feel free to stick around for a while and wish on a number of stars.

Next day, you’ll find Star Fragments, Large Star Fragments, Zodiac Star Fragments on the beaches of your island. Total number of amount is same as how many times you’ve prayed wishes last night.

Zodiac Star Fragments are depending on what time of the year you experience the shooting star event, you'll get a different Zodiac Star Fragment. By using these items, you'll be able to make a unique piece of furniture based on that Zodiac Sign. (Currently, Aries)

You can craft various furniture and0 Zodiac furniture via DIY recipes with those Star Fragments.

How Animal Crossing: New Horizons Seasonal DLC Works

One of the highlights of any Animal Crossing game is to get to experience the cute world full of silly critters at some of the most exciting times of the year; holidays. Whether it be the spooky silliness of Halloween, the jolly cheer of Christmas, or the anticipation of New Years, holidays promise special characters, items, and events for players to immerse themselves in.

And while New Horizons still feature these, they are being implemented in ways not possible in prior generations of the series, with some subtle changes making the holidays of New Horizons just a little different in how they work.

While the overall time system of New Horizons is still attached to the clock of the Nintendo Switch, holidays are not. Rather, they are being implemented into the game as DLC, which can only be accessed during certain times of the year. DLC will be added a couple of weeks in advance of a holiday, potentially providing players with events or special interactions that will last for a few days prior to the holiday in question.

The first example of this we are set to see is for Easter, or Bunny Day. Zipper T. Bunny, the Easter Bunny stand-in of the series, will arrive on your island, hiding eggs in various peculiar places for you to find, burying them and throwing them in the ocean for you to discover. Additionally, you will be allowed to craft special items from an egg series of furniture, only available to be built during this specific time of the year.

This event is set to be launched from April 1st through the 12th, lasting a little less than 2 weeks, although this could change due to the issues folks have had working during the COVID-19 outbreak. More holidays are planned for the future as well, with the next scheduled event being in celebration of Earth Day.

These changes to how holidays will be handled are slight, but carry some big implications with them. While the time-traveling element of Animal Crossing is still intact, if very tedious to do, no longer can you visit holidays with this technique. Rather, players will be forced to log in over the course of these 12-day periods in order to experience any of what these DLC packs have to offer. To some, this seems trivial, as they have the time and ability to log in every day, but to others, this can mean missing out on a ton of content depending on when business trips, family events, or other personal life events prevent them from putting the time into their games.

This can also mean that we may not see holidays on time. As mentioned above, Bunny Day may or may not be released after the time period suggested, resulting in players having to wait for whenever the DLC can be launched. While this isn’t a huge deal, it does mean that content will always be dictated by Nintendo’s whims. If in the future they choose to no longer support New Horizons in favor of a different console or edition of the game, players will never get to experience holidays in New Horizons ever again.

Ultimately, I find these policies to be somewhat anti-consumer. Yes, we are theoretically seeing new content every year for the holidays, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Nintendo cycling through the same content year after year for a given holiday. The main goal of this is to prevent the abuse of time-travel, as Nintendo executives have stated, which is silly for a game meant to empower its players and make them feel like they’re making their dream homes.

What do you think? Are you excited for what Bunny Day has in store, or are you frustrated by Nintendo’s controlling policies, let me know in the comments below!

[Tip] How to buy & sell Turnip

Hey, how's your island?

Now many people would be suffered by debt from Tom Nook I think.

To pay the debt, we need to earn Bells. There are various ways to earn Bells, but buying and selling turnip is the easiest and the most famous way in Animal Crossing series.

1) Buying turnips
Once you build Nook's Cranny, Daisy Mae who sells turnip will send you a mail.

After that, Daisy Mae will visit your island every Sunday, 6 AM to 12 PM. She'll stay only for 6 hours so do not miss this chance!
Turnip price (both buying and selling) is different for each player. If turnip is too expensive in your island, visit other's island rather than just giving up. (Nintendo Switch Online service is required to visit other player's island)

Once you bought them, you can put the turnips in your house, or bury them in the hole to keep it.

2) Selling turnips

If you've bought enough turnip, Tommy & Timmy in Nook's Cranny accepts them from Monday to Saturday. They don't accept turnips on Sunday so you need to wait for a day.

Sales prices change twice a day, in the morning (before 12 PM) and in the afternoon.

You need to visit Nook's Cranny twice a day and check the sale price of Turnip. Compare to buying price and sell it when Nook's Cranny is accepting them at a high price.

Turnips only last for 1 week. If you don't sell them until next Sunday, they'll get rotten. So you should sell them before Sunday.

There's one thing you should know.

DO NOT CHANGE THE SWITCH TIME TO THE PAST.

Turnips have 1 week of the expiration date. You can change the Nintendo Switch date to the future for only up to 6 days. If you set the date for more than 7 days of the future, they'll get rotten.

Also If you change the date to the past, even just for 10 min, they'll get rotten immediately.

So never change the Nintendo Switch date when you have turnips (wherever they are).
