Sombra REWORK - Good or Bad?

Sombra is getting some major changes which will drastically affect her playstyle. While there are a lot clickbait videos out there saying "HUGE SOMBRA BUFF" etc, let's be clear: this is NOT a buff. This is a REWORK, and will change the way in which Sombra will be played.   The changes: 1) Sombra no longer gains ult from health pack healing. -This is an absolutely massive change (and obviously a huge nerf). Currently Sombra's ult is everything, and using hacked health packs to gain charge was the fastest and most effective way to charge her ult. This hurts Sombra immensely.   2) Weapon Spread decreased by 10% - This is a welcome buff, but doesn't address the main issue. Yes, Sombra's gun is the most inaccurate in the game, but that's not really the problem. The problem is Sombra's lack of damage at close range where the spread doesn't matter as much. Sombra is never going to be the hitscan that can take care of Pharah. This buff is a step in the wrong direction and doesn't align with Sombra's kit/playstyle. They should instead be focusing on making Sombra more effective in close range fights.   3) Hacking speed increased from 0.8s to 0.65s - This is a genuinely good buff, hacking currently takes way too long to be used reliably.   4) Hacking will disable more abilities. (Genji's Double Jump/Wall Climb, Pharah's Hover Jets, Hanzo's Wall Climb, Lucio's currently running Crossfade song will be disabled, Mercy's Angelic Descent) - Another genuinely good buff. There's are the types of abilities that currently make Sombra's successful hacks feel incredibly unrewarding.   Analysis:   This is a step in the wrong direction. This is Blizzard trying to turn Sombra from a support into a DPS without actually doing anything to increase her ability to do damage. The 10% reduced spread does absolutely nothing in the scenarios that Sombra WANTS to be in. The improved hacking speed is excellent, but at the end of the day all you've done is spend over half a second to make a fight simply gun vs gun and your gun is always worse. In other words, Sombra has to make herself vulnerable and stop dealing damage just to be able to fight at a slight disadvantage instead of a significant disadvantage.   The key issue is that Sombra's kit asks her to sneakily approach somebody, hack them so they can't use their abilities to win the fight, and then you kill them 1v1. The problem is that even after step 1 and 2, Sombra doesn't have the damage to win the 1v1. Sombra doesn't need less weapon spread, she needs more damage.   Summary: While I agree that Sombra should be more of a DPS than a support, none of the buffs are enough to outweigh the huge nerf to Sombra's ult charge. I expect Sombra to remain the lowest win-rate champion in the game and would not be surprised to see her win-rate drop even further following this rework.   TL;DR: Thematically a step in the right direction, but they're ignoring the main issue. Overall this is a bad rework, and it will likely make Sombra even worse.   What do you guys think of these changes? How would you change Sombra to make her more effective? I know I'm not the only Sombra main out there.

    I agree with most of your analysis but I think there are a couple points that you're a bit off. Your assessments of what is and and isn't a buff are totally spot on.

    First, you say "The 10% reduced spread does absolutely nothing in the scenarios that Sombra WANTS to be in." I think that's inaccurate. You're implying Sombra wants to be up close and personal and I really don't think that's the case. Let me elaborate below.

    Secondly, you say "The key issue is that Sombra's kit asks her to sneakily approach somebody, hack them so they can't use their abilities to win the fight, and then you kill them 1v1." I think this is an egregious misinterpretation of how Sombra is supposed to be played currently. I've dabbled with Sombra a bit and watched a decent amount of her being played at a high level and that is completely the wrong way to play Sombra. As you said yourself, she doesn't have the damage to close out 1v1s. The solution to that? Stop trying to 1v1 people. You're not Genji, you're not Tracer, stop trying to be.

    The best way to play Sombra is with your team. Hacking a Pharah or random backliners when you're Sombra is cute, but like you said you still can't 1v1 anyone in that time frame. Sombra plays so much better when you're with your team. Hack a Reinhardt to drop his shield and now your team can storm through the choke. Hack a Genji after he dives in and he can't dive out (and pretty soon won't be able to double jump!)

    Ultimately, I think this rework doesn't change much except losing ult charge from the health packs. At my level (mid-plat) teammates wouldn't use the healthpacks anyway. Now, you can get ult charge for yourself more reliably with your weapon.

    As you said, Sombra can't 1v1 anyone. So stop trying and play with your team.


    P.S. I think one change they could make to Sombra if they wanted her to be an assassin, which she currently isn't, would be to allow her to do extra damage to hacked targets.

    I think you may have misunderstood what I meant when talking about the Sombra's kit vs her playstyle. My issue is that currently, her playstyle makes no sense with her kit. You're right that Sombra, the way she is right now, does not want to 1v1. That's the problem. When somebody's kit is to go invisible (enabling you to sneak behind enemy lines) and then to be able to teleport out of a bad situation, the kit is designed for you to sneak into the back line, kill somebody, and then run away. This is currently NOT optimal Sombra play even though it SHOULD be optimal Sombra play. I should have been more precise in my original post but hopefully that clears up what I meant.

    I wish they would let you hack while invisible cuz it'd be nice to sneak up to torbs turret and hack it without dying

    I disagree. Honestly doing anything except for run while invisible is OP. You could sneak up on a turreted Bastion and line up a shot and take at least 3 quaters of his health maybe kill him and he has nothing to do about it, and the same with hacking because Bastions already get booted out of healing itself and their sentry mode. If this rework is true you can also find a Pharah who landed and hack them with no consequences besides a possible death.

    I know they're tweaking unpicked heroes. I hope she benefits highly out of this rework.

    These was a brief bug where these changes were active on the live servers but they quickly fixed it. The rework will be active on PTR on the next update, so probably the update after that for these to hit live.

    I'm excited. While this will change her from a hybrid support to more of frontal assault character (almost similar to tracer) I really like that change, afterall she is under attack. Maybe in really high up in competitive play this may be detrimental, but for someone in gold platinum or diamond, I think this makes her more fun and viable in previously terrible situations. I'm just thrilled they're finally decreasing the spread on her gun cuz her accuracy was pretty bad. And with her clip size, she can almost rival tracer in terms of speed and damage output.

    I do not like #4. As Pharah and Lucio main playing against Sombra is going to greatly decrease my survivabilty.

    I personally think there good it'll make her have to get into fights more and make her more engaging instead of basically hiding getting a few shots on someone every now and then and wait for her emp I think she will be more fun to play now or at least for me

    I think that when somra users her ult it should give her double damage for 10 seconds and she starts to glow like when Zarya is charged
