60 seconds! Review


This game is a survival simulation game produced by Robot Gentleman on May 26, 2015 and released through Steam. Since nuclear weapons are released 60 seconds after the nuclear weapons alert is sounded, it is a game to enter and survive in an air-raid shelter with as many surviving items and families as possible.
 
 
The game starts with the view of Dad 'Ted' or Mom 'Dolores' and starts with the 3D Quarter View. The game counts 60 seconds with a pocket watch in the upper right corner, and you must stock up as many items as possible and take your family and evacuate to the air-raid shelter in a given time. If you don't get into the air defense in 60 seconds, the game will be over immediately.
 
For easy difficulty (Little Boy) and normal difficulty (Fat Man), there is a search time (time to locate the required items) before the collection time, so use it well. In the case of difficulty level (Char Bomba), it starts immediately without time to explore. In the beginning, the second hand of the watch is tilted to the left, counting 10 seconds (Fat Man) or 20 seconds (Little Boy) to search for items. In the meantime, you cannot pick up items or take your family with you.
 
At the end of the search time, the nuclear weapons alarm goes off, and it starts counting 60 seconds. At this time, Ted's inventory is up to four compartments, and the number of compartments occupied by items and families varies, so it is important to draw the proper movement line in consideration of the number of compartments and move efficiently. (Despite the nuclear alarm, the rest of the family is doing their job in a leisurely manner.)
 
Inside the air defense shelter, it is a 2D adventure genre, and every day, it checks the family's condition by looking at a diary full of individuality, allocates food and water, and treats it with items such as first aid when injured or sick. You can periodically send someone to the ground to collect items. Occasional attacks of intensity, access by strangers, and the emergence of radioactive cockroaches require multiple items to respond appropriately or determine their behavior and allow bartering for occasional merchants.
 
At first glance, the way the game looks simple, and actually it is, but the reason why the difficulty of the game increases is that the game itself depends on luck from beginning to end. Even in the early days of packing, families, and items are randomly located, and all events taking place inside the shelter are triggered with a random probability. Even if you have a lot of items, you can easily see the ending by repeatedly getting the right items at the right time, while failing in connection with insomnia/earthquake/watering events from the 2nd day.
 
 
There are so many items in this game and each one is important. The most important thing to choose is stew and water. In this game, tomato soup is your only food, and water is essential to humans, so it is better to pack two or more of these two things when you pack things for the first 60 seconds.
 
Other items include maps, radios, gas masks, axes, rifles, first aid boxes, ammunition, flashlights, books, insecticides, checkers, cards, and lock locks, where radio and one weapon and a book are really important items, so I recommend you to pack them. It's good to have the rest of the items, but if you haven't, let's look forward to the event in the game.
 
There are four main characters in this game, Ted, Dolores, Mary Jane, and Timmy.
 
Ted is the one who prepares things to take to the shelter for 60 seconds after the game starts and is the main character of the game. If you don't spend a long period of time exploring as the family's father, you go crazy. Other than radiation-induced diseases, there is no chance that family members will get hurt after exploring.
 
Dolores is a mother and is in an air defense shelter, preventing children from running away. Because of this, Dolores rarely explores, and if Ted dies, he cannot go out at all. (It's because the game is over if neither Ted nor Dolores are on the air defense.)
 
Mary Jane, the eldest daughter of the family, runs away from home if she has no parents or if she neglects hunger, dehydration, injury, or pain for a long time. One special thing is that it mutates at a low probability, which improves the ability to collect and immunize against all conditions except hunger and hunger. The strength is much stronger, so even when a robber is without a weapon, he uses his bare hands to catch a robber. Even if a probe is sent outside, it will return 100 percent regardless of radiation or the situation occupied by robbers.
 
Timmy runs away from home if he has no parents like Mary Jane, or if he neglects hunger, dehydration, injury, or pain for a long time. However, if a parent dies because he or she is young, the probability is high. His specialty is Boy Scout, and there are related scenarios, and his family teases him, saying that Timmy is the only one who has been trained in Boy Scout since the Boy Scout book has disappeared. Perhaps that's why there is a higher chance of exploding a jackpot in an expedition than in other families.
 
 
There are many events during their survival, most of which occur randomly and come with a mixture of good and bad events. To tell you the typical story, there are times when only one of the three blood-like items is on the verge of being destroyed at the same time by fire, earthquake, and flood, and only one of them can be saved: 1. Map, card, radio 2, flashlight, radio, gas mask 3. Radio, book, first aid kit, and so on. All of these items play an important role in survival, so when this event comes up, I really cry. It is better to save the radio when the first and second come out, and to get a book when the third comes out. It's actually the worst event.
 
Among the good events are animal events. As the game progresses, there is an event in which the animal's eyes stare in the bushes, and if you select a flashlight, you find a dog and the animal event begins. From then on, this dog often comes out, and good things will happen if the event continues until the end.
 
There are four kinds of the survived ending: military unit ending, friendly ending, agent ending, and mad doctor ending. The way each ending is viewed is all different, and some can be viewed only if the conditions are met. The easiest ending is the ending of the military unit, and you can see the ending after various events, starting with hearing the news that you are coming to the radio for the first time. It will be fun to play the rest of the ending for yourself.

OneShot is a unique, fourth-wall-breaking adventure game that features one-of-a-kind puzzling elements. On the surface, OneShot looks like little more than your typical RPG Maker game, but it somehow has transcended its developmental limitations and earned widespread critical acclaim. What makes OneShot so special?
OneShot takes an extremely unique approach to character design and development. You, the player, are a major character in the game. Your goal is to help Niko, a young lost cat-like girl, save the strange and unfamiliar world that she now finds herself in. This world is dark, somber, and filled with dysfunctional robots who are counting on you and Niko to restore their sun and along with it, their hope. Niko is this world’s messiah, and you are this world’s god.
To describe this game as one that “breaks the fourth wall” would be underselling it. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I will just say this: not only are you a character in the game, but you must take actions outside of the game in order to progress. OneShot takes place in a world of computers and robots, and those who consider themselves to be severely computer illiterate may find some of the game’s puzzles to be quite difficult or confusing. Fortunately, the game does a good job of offering hints should you need them.
OneShot’s narrative is very layered and complex. Everybody is looking to somebody else for direction, but who really has the answers? Certainly not us. The way that OneShot draws parallels between you and the game’s characters creates a truly surreal experience. You are acutely aware that you are playing a game, but somehow it feels like so much more. It is very easy to form a sincere attachment to Niko and the others, so much so that life and vitality seem to ooze out of them by the story’s end.
Unfortunately, the end is not so easy to get to. Much like Undertale, the first playthrough of OneShot only scratches the surface of the complete picture. There are fragments of information, scattered hints and suggestions, but ultimately a lingering sense that something is missing. I feel very similarly with OneShot to how I felt with Undertale: the first playthrough is very good but it’s not nearly as impressive as people make it out to be. In both of these cases, it’s the New Game+ and subsequent playthroughs that transcend them beyond the ordinary.
I want to make this abundantly clear: the NG+ in OneShot is phenomenal. However, I must admit that there are a few things I disliked about this game and pretty much all of them were within the first playthrough. The game presents itself as one in which each of your actions has a critical impact, but this really is not the case. The dialogue can often get clunky the more you interact with the characters and this become frustrating over time because there’s no way to skip a dialogue once you’ve started it. There were times in which the logic didn’t make sense and, in a way, the game discourages exploration. None of these issues are severe enough to cause any real dissatisfaction, but they do somewhat detract from the otherwise wonderfully immersive story.
OneShot provides one of the best, most captivating narratives I’ve ever seen in a game. It does an incredibly good job of making you attached to the characters while simultaneously reminding you that this is nothing more than a game. And my goodness what a bizarre, beautiful game it is. I really, really want to give this a perfect score, but the first playthrough admittedly has its flaws and I think that the mechanisms of the puzzles may be off-putting to those who aren't so computer savvy. That said, this game is absolutely worth playing and I would highly recommend it to anybody who enjoys off-the-wall puzzlers or narrative-driven games.

First Impressions: Super Hexagon

Super Hexagon is a frenetic, fast-paced twitch game in which you control a tiny triangle in a desperate attempt to avoid hitting the numerous walls that rapidly descend upon you. Although it may look like a basic flash game from the age of old, Super Hexagon has earned an abundance of accolades and was a finalist for several publications’ Game of the Year award. On the surface, Super Hexagon boasts little more than a simple premise and a bleak artstyle; could this game really be that good?
The gameplay in Super Hexagon is extremely straightforward. There are only 2 buttons in the entire game: left and right. As you rotate your little triangle around the evolving shape in the center of the screen, you must avoid the seemingly endless amount of walls that fly at you. If you hit a wall, even just once, it’s game over and you must start again from the beginning.
Let me make one thing clear right now: this game is hard. Like really, really hard. Like the game’s easiest difficulty is literally called hard, hard. Although each round starts off at a reasonable difficulty, the game quickly ramps up and can seem near-impossible just seconds later. Simple walls turn into complex patterns and each round is different from the last, so while memory of patterns is important, it’s impossible to memorize each level and you’ll instead have to rely on your intuition and reaction speed. Here's a brief gif of some of my gameplay so you can see what I mean (epilepsy warning):
The game is divided into six different geometrical levels at 10-second intervals: point, line, triangle, square, pentagon, and hexagon. The goal in Super Hexagon is twofold: beat your previous best time and try to survive the full 60-seconds to reach the hexagon level at the “end” of the game. When you die - which you will, a lot - you’ll be shown your time of survival along with your historical personal best. Jumping right back in is easy and addicting; be prepared to hear the words “Game Over” and “Begin” about a thousand times on your journey to success.
While this game undeniably has that addictive property of the old Newgrounds and Kongregate era flash games, it also suffers from some of the same issues that eventually made those games die off. The control in Super Hexagon is frankly pretty awful. It is so easy to overshoot or undershoot and nearly impossible to correct, which often leads to feeling that you lost for reasons other than your skill. Turning off V-Sync helped significantly with the controls, but it was still far from ideal. While I can’t deny that Super Hexagon does demand a lot of skill and quick reactions, much of the difficulty in the game ultimately comes from its disorienting nature - so much so that I would not recommend this game to anyone who suffers from motion sickness or epilepsy. With all that being said, I must admit that it was very satisfying to finally “beat” the game, even on the "easiest" difficulty.
Overall, Super Hexagon is solid for what it is. It’s a fun, addicting little time waster with a catchy soundtrack, but the fact that this game was a finalist for several game of the year and design awards is pretty mind blowing to me. We’re talking about the same year that launched some of the best indie games of all time like Fez, Faster Than Light, and Journey. Super Hexagon is fun for a bit, but it was made in less than 12 hours during a game jam. Fez took more than 5 years. C’mon now.

The initial experience was more than Satisfactory 😇

The Steam Summer Sale is on and this is when we burn a hole in our pockets, fooling ourselves into buying games that We Will Absolutely Play™️ but will likely stay on the shelf until the next summer sale rolls around. For me, at least, Satisfactory is not that game.
Games have always been a form of appreciation for life outside of the real world. It isn't escapism per se, although it is very easy to escape from our reality when we launch any game at all. To me, however, it serves more to augment how I view my reality at times. Instead of bleakness, I've learned to approach people and problems creatively, more honestly, and with the same curiosity and caution. It's also living vicariously through the eyes of another character that is an extension of myself. When I played Satisfactory, I couldn't shake the feeling that this is a world that I would love to spend time in to regulate my thoughts and emotions and to recuperate from a hard time. It was the same response that I had when I played No Man's Sky in VR. It's just something about the beautiful, vast expanse of a game world that permits you to slow down that real life just doesn't offer.
 
I've always been a sucker for beautiful environments and the potential to explore without... I don't know... dying, since I'm pretty terrible with combat 75% of the time. If it's not a hardcore survival game and there are beautiful places to discover, I really would prefer not to engage in combat because it ruins the immersiveness of discovery. It's just something about being able to feel safe while exploring in video games that I love. The liberty to walk around without constantly worrying about “the bad stuff” that happens in the real world my parents always warned me about is why I love titles like this so much.
But I probably wouldn’t have picked it up if it wasn’t for my girlfriend wanting to play it because the trailer had a heavy emphasis on building. Then again, assembling a ridiculous, not safe (in reality) for work, parts manufacturing factory is the point of the game after all. However, I would have hopped on the train earlier if I had known that the world was going to be so damn beautiful and so much more than just building.
 
And when I finally got into it, I'm already off exploring and my inclination for photographing pretty things kicked in. Sometimes I stray off my main objective (collecting materials for my girlfriend who’s busy building our satisfactory kingdom at home…) to take in-game photographs aka screenshots of breathtaking sceneries and the various oddities I find along the way... but it was definitely worth it. The only thing that annoyed me when I took these screenshots was that I am unable to turn off the HUD. I could only resize them smaller. That aside, I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed snapping them.
Going for a swim in a giant lake and crossing it from one end to another. Passed by a poisonous gas forest area on the way and I’m glad I didn’t choose to walk… In the sky, another planet is visible.

The night time is both beautiful and eerie since there are alien animals lurking around (did I mention spiders? I had one jump scare because I had no idea there were spiders half my size in the caves 😭). The planet that was visible during the daytime is clearer at night. I mistook it for the moon at the beginning.

Whether you’re a seasoned survivalist or a newbie, you can scale the game according to your preference with the 4 difficulty presets before you begin. In my opinion, there is something for the ones who love the open world and the rhythmic sense of achievement that the game provides. I know I derive satisfaction from exploring the open world while my girlfriend enjoy building the smartest manufacturing route, and designing our home on top of coming along with me on little adventures.
 
Every time I play, I’ve spent 3-4 hours in one sitting just enjoying the time working towards a common goal with my partner in the game. It's familiar, it has variations in its repetitiveness so that it's not boring. For an early access title, it’s already quite solid. Honestly it's been so great bonding with my partner in-game since we can’t see each other due to the lock down. It's another form of relief that isn't granted to us during this ongoing pandemic and even without the current dire circumstance, I do foresee us playing this for a long time.

Ryan's Always Right: Night in the Woods

Do you like being sad? Well, have I got a game for you. Night in the Woods is a single-player adventure where you play as Mae, a young college dropout who has returned home and is struggling to find her place in the world. As you explore your hometown and try to rekindle lost friendships, Mae’s troubled past slowly reveals itself as she transitions into adulthood and her mental state deteriorates.
Night in the Woods is a story about growing up, but unlike most games which typically focus on adolescence, Night in the Woods is about early adulthood. At 20 years old, Mae isn’t a kid anymore by age but her actions and perception of the world show otherwise. She’s only been away from home for 2 years, but much has changed since then. While Mae has been in college, her friends have all transitioned into the “real” world. They have jobs and responsibilities, they have intimate relationships and bills to pay, and life for them simply isn’t centered around fun anymore.
This isn’t to say that Mae doesn’t have her own problems, she certainly does, but she severely lacks empathy and understanding of the plight of those around her and of what being an adult truly means. Her relationship with her parents isn’t great and while Mae is upset because she feels like nobody understands her, she really makes no effort to be understood. She chastises people for treating her like a kid, asserting that she’s an adult and “can handle the truth,” but simultaneously refuses to open up about her own past and won’t even tell her friends or parents why she dropped out of school. Mae severely struggles with her mental health, but so does everyone else.
The story is convoluted, embodying the walking enigma that is human nature. Every character in Night in the Woods has their own hopes and desires as well as their own hardships and failings. Whether or not you want to uncover all of this is up to you. At its core Night in the Woods is just a glorified walking simulator, prioritizing exploration and dialogue above all else. While it does have some minor puzzle and platforming elements, neither is very difficult or significant. This game largely consists of walking around the town, talking to the same people every day, and seeing how their lives are changing alongside your own.
In terms of gameplay, Night in the Woods is pretty lacking. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing in such a story-centric game, I found that some of the design choices created unwanted lulls and that the pacing of the game and storytelling was simply off at times. For example, the core gameplay is walking around and exploring, but your character moves rather slowly and walking to the same place 40 times in a row can get tiring. The walking-sim-type gameplay is broken up by various minigames and events, but none of them contributed to the story significantly enough to warrant their forced inclusion. I also found the repeated dream sequences to be rather tedious over time, although I’ll admit that they did provide some of the prettiest artwork in the game.
Night in the Woods is honestly a pretty brutal game. You’re stuck in this loop between hope and sadness, slowly realizing and coming to terms with everything adulthood entails. While I’d argue that the age of the player is insignificant for most games, I think that Night in the Woods finds its strength in resonance and that a player would likely have to be at least in their 20’s and have experienced these themes first-hand in order to fully appreciate this game. I expect that most people will either love Night in the Woods or find it to be extremely boring, with little in between. While Night in the Woods isn’t without its flaws and its pacing could certainly be improved, if you’re the type of person who thinks they would enjoy this game, you’ll probably consider it to be a borderline-masterpiece.

First Impressions: Ethereal

Ethereal is a unique, award-winning 2D puzzle game that has been heralded for its minimalistic art style and sound design. Described as a “profound experience that carries players into an unknown and mysterious world surrounded by carefully designed puzzles,” Ethereal certainly presents itself as something special. Does it live up to the hype?
In Ethereal you play as a round blob who must navigate increasingly abstract and convoluted puzzle worlds in an effort to reach the portal at the end. You’re immediately thrown into a vacant, grey world with no narrative and no instructions. There is no hand-holding in Ethereal; the only way to learn in this strange world is by playing. In doing so, Ethereal constantly toes the line between familiar and novel. For example, unlike most games which typically use walls as barriers, Ethereal takes the exact opposite approach and forces you to pass through walls in order to move vertically.
Ethereal introduces new mechanics in a way that is very satisfying and fits wonderfully with the aesthetic of the game. The levels are presented as an open-ended puzzle but it’s always clear what your objective is even though it’s never overtly stated. This makes it so that your attention is always brought to any new mechanics, enabling you to quickly learn them with ease. The specific manner in which you must use your new tools in order to complete the puzzle may not be so straightforward, of course, but the ease of discovery and revelation is omnipresent.
The puzzling itself, while it’ll give your brain a good tickle, isn’t particularly challenging, especially for well-seasoned puzzle players. The joy in Ethereal comes much more from exploring the beautiful worlds than from any mind-bending triumphs. I really like the aesthetic of this game, it's minimalist in nature but it feels so alive in this faded yet vibrant environment.
Interestingly, Ethereal’s biggest praise has been for its sound design; unfortunately the audio in this game wore on me very quickly. While the sonics can indeed be very pretty, the same sounds that were originally charming eventually became cacophonous, so much so that I ended up muting the game and throwing on some of my own music. One of my biggest complaints about the game is that it implores you to explore these gorgeous worlds but simultaneously bugs you with annoying pings to focus you towards your objective. This is just one of many ways in which the game felt at odds with itself and ultimately one of the things that led me to feel that this game is more of a nice, casual time-waster rather than an award-worthy piece of art that deserves your undivided attention.
Ethereal is beautiful, well-designed, and in the endless ocean of puzzle games, provides something truly unique. It’s by no means perfect and as far as puzzle games go, Ethereal certainly leaves something to be desired in terms of difficulty. For me it feels like a great laid-back, time-waster type game, but it doesn’t really amount to much more. It’s still an interesting experience, it’s still worth playing, but I don’t think that Ethereal is quite deserving of the praise it's received within indie circles.

Ryan's Always Right: Minit

Minit is a unique, one-of-a-kind adventure game where the journey takes place just one minute at a time. Featuring a strange yet captivating premise and a retro black-and-white artstyle, Minit was quick to catch my attention. What does this bite-sized game have lurking beneath the surface?
Minit is a game that is completely committed to its core concept. You play the game in 60-second chunks, and absolutely everything in this game is designed with that in mind. Unlike most games which start off with an engaging cinematic or text-box dialog that explains the backstory, Minit throws you right into the gameplay with no explanation whatsoever. You awake inside of a bleak, nondescript home. 60 seconds later, the game “resets” your progress and you awake in your home once again.
The world outside your domicile is a strange one. The oddities are plentiful and deliberate, attempting to make the most of the fact that discovery and understanding are both very hard to come by when you’re limited to just one minute of gameplay at a time. Thankfully there is always progress to be made in Minit, and almost always more than meets the eye. As you traverse the land, you’ll encounter powerful items that stay in your possession even after the 60-second reset. Through clever puzzle-solving and intuition, these items are the keys that will enable you to unravel the mysteries of Minit’s bizarre world and break your minute-long curse.
The more you travel across the land, the more it becomes abundantly clear that everything has a purpose. This attention to detail is easily one of my favorite aspects about Minit, but it also comes with some frustrating downsides. While the game does a great job of making you feel like you’re always on the brink of discovery, sometimes it gets a bit too laborious or taxing. For example, you might reach a new area and be seconds away from completing its puzzle, only for your time to run out and have to do it again. This isn’t necessarily a pro or a con, but it’s likely to be a polarizing aspect of the game for many players.
Overall, I really enjoyed the concept of this game and think it’s well-executed in many ways. The attention to detail is undeniable and it’s incredible that the developer was able to craft a world that felt natural to explore in 60-second chunks. That said, I still felt that Minit left something to be desired. Minit is an incredibly short game and, while I think the game’s brevity was necessary in this case, it’s difficult to recommend a game that costs $10 and can be completed in under an hour. There is a significant amount of extra content - and it’s worth doing - but at the end of the day Minit is still just a short, streamlined game with an interesting premise. If the premise sounds captivating to you then you’ll probably love Minit; if not, you can give this game a pass.

First Impressions: Ape Out

Ape Out is a top-down smash ‘em up game where you play as a trapped ape on a rampageous escape from your human captors. Featuring a simple yet bold art style and a dynamic jazz soundtrack, Ape Out certainly boasts an appealing aesthetic. Is Ape Out as intriguing as its visage suggests?
Gameplay in Ape Out is simple and streamlined. You must navigate your way through a maze-like level while evading or annihilating the numerous human guards who block your path. There are a variety of different enemies, each posing its own offensive and defensive challenge. For example, one enemy may attack with a shotgun and be resistant to bullets while another enemy attacks with explosives and is resistant to close-combat attacks. This makes it so that many levels require a combination of careful strategy and quick reactions so that you can take out the priority targets and progress through the level.
Each level seamlessly progresses into the next, making the game feel like one massive escape sequence. Although each stage goes from left to right and has a clear end point, the game does a great job of presenting itself as a high-paced, frantic adventure inside a massive labyrinth. Death is nothing to be afraid of in Ape Out. When you die, you are shown a map of the current stage along with the exact route you traveled before meeting your demise. You then restart at the beginning of the stage, but the stages are somewhat random so you might encounter some slight differences from your previous run.
While I don’t really have any complaints about the gameplay, the appeal in Ape Out ultimately lies in its aesthetic. This isn’t to say that the game is only skin-deep, quite the contrary in fact, but rather that the aesthetic choices infect every aspect of the game and have more significance than meets the eye. For example, you have no health bar in this game. Instead, your character oozes out bright colored blood with every shot you take, leaving a progressively larger trail of blood behind you.
Ape Out isn’t a perfect game nor is it some revolutionary masterpiece that’s going to change your life, but as far as casual, beat ‘em up style games go, Ape Out is worth your attention. It does a great job of creating a unique and engrossing atmosphere while the frenetic pacing turns each level into an intense, nail-biting experience. The game starts out easy but quickly ramps up in difficulty and should prove to be an ample challenge for beginners and veterans alike.

Time flies and the newest episode of Duck in games is available for everyone. It's just a couple of thoughts about Disco Elysium and why is it my second all-time favorite game
 
Disco Elysium is a big game. It has ambitions, it has world, it has everything to grab your interest. In fact, it grabs the interest so much, that only while rendering the episode I thought, that I have never touched the aspect of fights in the game. RPG, where fighting is not even a tertiary thing. It’s so unimportant, that you can go through the game and never even physically oppose anyone. And you may still win at the game! Well… win as in… do whatever you feel like and not get punished for it.

This map is such a fun one to play but I keep failing at the end 😢 I need a lot more practice on this. I was talking to someone in my YouTube comments the other day about how to play/get through hard songs. Usually, I tend to watch my own replays or other people's videos to see what I'm screwing up and that helps because you know what you can improve on. Also, the Slower Song modifier? A lifesaver.
