A Disturbing Trend Within the FIFA Community: The Complacent Acceptance of Microtransactions
While I was doing my usual tradition of reading about the video games industry and microtransactions, in order to get myself upset and disturb my own peace, I came to a weird conclusion that the FIFA community is way too complacent in supporting microtransactions. I say this because when we watch or read an article about EA it's never about how they are milking the FIFA community and monetizing the awesome game mode that is Ultimate Team.
In trying to find a good reason for as to why the case of FIFA players (not all players) being complacent with how EA treats them, by making card packs flashy and convenient to use, I haven't been able to really come up with a satisfying as to why. The best that I've come up with is that the average FIFA player just accepts that their favorite game comes with a higher entrance cost that is very difficult to make go away. It definitely is a lot easier to just spend money on buying packs instead of grinding currency.
One would think that FIFA players would have been paying attention how EA caught a huge amount of flak for how they tied Star Wars Battlefront 2's in game progression to loot boxes and made getting the sufficient currency a complete slog. What ends up happening is that Battlefront 2's system of progression greatly encouraged people to buy loot boxes is order to cut out the huge amount of hours people needed to grind in order to get better cards.
The same can be said about FIFA as well with its ultimate team mode. Those who have the money will spend it and have a huge advantage over someone is spending hours and hours grinding just to get a card that wasn't worth the time or duplicate of a card. Either way, EA loves to try and get people to spend unnecessary money on their online games. In essence these games are pay-to-way to different degrees, which is unacceptable.
The games industry has to stop this anti-consumer practice. With that said, consumers also have to stop supporting these unethical practices. We are also part of the problem. On a side note, we gotta stop preordering games that don't gives us a good amount of info on the game.
