Why is WoW NOT Considered One of the Greats?

There are a lot of games that have been considered one of the greatest of all time. Ocarina of Time gets tossed out a lot. You know how Dunkey feels about Super Mario Bros. 2, and you can read my pitch for GTA V here: https://moot.us/lounges/16/boards/51/posts/158982

Why GTA V is the Greatest Game of All Time Why GTA V is the Greatest Game of All Time Although it's been a bit of a rocky journey, Grand Theft Auto has become a gaming goliath and joined the likes of Mario and Pokemon as a household name. It's been more than 20 years since the GTA came out and paranoid soccer moms have been dreading the title ever since. This is a series that has sparked outrage, protest, and evening news segments claiming that it turns kids into killers and drug dealers. But even though the outside world saw these games as dangerous, the gaming community saw them for what they really were: incredible. Of course, we've come a long way in 20 years. The Grand Theft Auto franchise is now widely considered among the best ever and has earned every bit of both its critical acclaim and commercial success. But this isn't about the series. This is about GTA V. And why GTA V is the greatest game of all time. I’m not gonna delve deep into the single player/story because it’s excellent but you already know it’s excellent because it’s something that GTA games consistently do excellently. And I’m not trying to downplay it, if GTA V was only single player it would still be a fantastic, award-winning game. But I’m so glad it’s not. GTA has always be at the forefront of providing gamers with plenty of content and plenty of freedom, and GTA V Online is what happens when they dial it up to 11. This is the type of freedom you get when the franchise that made open world the standard decides that gamers are too restricted. There’s not many games out there where you can blow things up with helicopters, join the mafia, become an assassin, have tank wars and knife fights and you get the point. You can do literally anything you want. Here’s a story: I was browsing GTA on Twitch for the first time and randomly clicked on one of the top English streams. I think it had like 900 viewers. It was some guy in a role playing server, and he was role playing as a member of the Kudo Kai Yakuza. He was engaged to a wealthy businessman which had apparently ruffled some feathers in the community and people were out to assassinate the Kudo Kai guy. Over the course of 10 minutes I watched this guy hire security, wait for security while his chauffeur drove him around, get shot by an assassin, get driven to the hospital, and have surgery. While he’s at the hospital, a sheriff comes with a handcuffed inmate that needs treatment for taser wounds. While the doctor is tending to the inmate, the sheriff notices our Yakuza man and starts talking to him, at which point the inmate sprints out of the hospital and when the sheriff notices he chases after him. What's so crazy about that?THESE WERE ALL REAL PEOPLE. That was a real human being dressed up as an inmates, as a sheriff, as a nurse. Real people who had businesses as drivers or as security or as assassins. When you combine that level of freedom with the level of quality that GTA V gives you, what you get isn't just something magical. Not just a masterpiece. What you get is the best there is, the best there's ever been, the pinnacle. And I can't wait for a game to come and change my mind. PS: That guy never did get his deposit back for the security guards moot.us

But where is WoW's place in the mix?   Aside from Call of Duty, I can't think of a single game that's been more of a phenomenon than World of Warcraft, and I'd argue that WoW is even bigger than CoD. I mean, how many video games have gotten a dedicated South Park episode?   Everybody knows what WoW is, or has at least heard the mysterious name "Warcraft." Ask yo momma, ask yo gran momma. They know. And when they say Warcraft they're not talking about Warcraft 3 (which let's be honest, really deserves its own place in the discussion). World of Warcraft was the explosion of online multiplayer play; a place where you could be who you want surrounded by other people being who they wanted to be. Warcraft was 300lb men covered in Dorito dust in their mother's basement shouting "Leeeeeeroyyyyyyyyy Jennkins" at the start of every raid. Warcraft was gaming. Warcraft is gaming. So why is it not talked about as one of the greatest games?

World of Warcraft: General - Why is WoW NOT Considered One of the Greats? image 26

Know the phone number for Colombia Records? Me neither, but if we called them you know what they would say? Sales matter. Money talks. And World of Warcraft is the gaming industry's golden goose when it comes to revenue. This is a game that rakes in over a BILLION dollars a year and it's more than 14 years old. It's not just money either, WoW had a peak subscriber count of over 12 million players and some of the highest daily player counts in gaming history.   So, if everybody knows about WoW why is it not in the discussion of the GOAT's?   Clearly it's not because it's a bad game, otherwise it wouldn't still have 5 million active players after all these years. So why?   It seems to check all the boxes but even when I think about the greatest games of all time, WoW doesn't even come close for me. But maybe it should.   I was a big fan of Runescape back in the day, and still even play it on occasion now. Even though Runescape may have been considered the poor man's World of Warcraft, it was still a great game in its own right. And it didn't cost $15 every month and $50 up front. I played WoW, enjoyed it. But I loved Runescape. I put insane amounts of hours into that game and everybody that I knew was doing the same thing. The early days of Runescape were a moment in gaming unlike any other. Everybody was playing Runescape, and everybody cared.   I'm not trying to say that Runescape is a better game than WoW. But Runescape had the hearts of gamers, while WoW was busy making news headlines. Runescape was magical, and it stole some of the magic from WoW. Almost everyone remembers Runescape and has great memories with it. Do you?   Why do you think that World of Warcraft is not considered one of the greatest games of all time? Do you think it should be?   Let me know below!

Considering a game as greatest game of all time is a very subjective notion, so It’ll depend on everyone’s opinion, but there are some objective factors here too.

WoW is an awesome MMORPG, and it’s still the king of the hill on that genre.
But it’s a very old game ! It manages to stay relevant and keep a huge player base, but it remains an old game.

Other game from other genres were released between the beginning of WoW and now, so the player interest naturally shifts over time.

I do think it is one of the greatest experiences a game can have, but everybody has his own opinion !

I say it is? It’s been around for over 10 years, although I have my bad opinions of it since Argus, I still think it’s one of the best if not THE BEST!

I like that they’re bringing back the vanilla wow, “classic wow”. Let’s hope it doesn’t take too long to release though 😌

Wow is really well-made MMORPG. Nobody can deny that. But MMORPG becomes minor type of game as time passes. I think whether Wow should be considered one of the greatest games of all time or not can be determined only when concrete standards exist.

You pose a really good question. While I personally don't like the game WOW, due to me feeling like Blizzard destroyed the Warcraft game (I grew up with the RTS games), WOW should be considered to be one of the greatest games.

It has to be up there due to how many years the game has be going on for, how many expansions that have come out for it, the expansion of the Warcraft lore, and the amount of people dedicating so many hours playing it.

To not include it given its history, would be extremely weird. Maybe it's not included because it's only on PC which is and isn't a console. Usually when I google the greatest games of all time, usually what you see are articles that talk about console games. I don't think that this is right, but I feel like this is how people usually interpret that question.

That's just me though :). On a side note, Runescape is a fun game, and it's cool how a new version is coming out.

WoW is one of the greats.

It just so happens that the gaming world has expanded in massive ways since WoW was originally released more than 13 years ago. There’s an amount of diversity in gaming now that wasn’t even touched upon back then, and WoW just doesn’t currently fit the mold for being on top in overall popularity.

Yeah it definitely doesn't fit the modern mold for gaming. I think MMORPGs in general are on their way out. People don't want to invest time in grinding levels, they'd rather invest their time in developing skill.
