30yro Noob

Hi, I was just gifted Minecraft and just started playing. I'm typically a casual gamer, but would enjoy playing with others. I watch several youtubers playing Minecraft, including the recent Purge server that a bunch of big names are playing, which seems fun but beyond me. Any tips on getting started and the like? Which texture or mod packs are best? I have played a bit to get the hang of the controls (built a bed and dirt hut).
