Weird and wonderful history of Resident Evil

There’d been horror videogames before Resident Evil. As early as 1982, Atari had published James Andreasen’s innovative Haunted House, a game in which the player is represented as a pair of eyes and asked to explore the house of the recently deceased proprietor, Mr. Graves. You can see the DNA of Capcom’s game right there on the screen. You can only carry a limited number of items at any one time. Flight is preferred over fight. There’s a neat trick whereupon in later levels you can only see the walls of the house if you light a match.
